Is there a trick to cleaning soft contact lenses?

I've always had hard lenses which were easy to clean. Rub in the cleaner rinse off with water, repeat if necessary, soak. I've now
got soft lenses and a peroxide cleaner, supposed to put the lens in the case, fill with solution and leave overnight.

The lenses rarely look clean in the morning. The solution isn't a uniform film over the lens, it's patchy. In those patches it looks almost like the protein build up you get over a few months of hard lens use. The lenses are also blurry when I wear them and sometimes I have to take them out. It gets worse towards the end of the month.

what am I doing wrong?

Switch to dailies!

If then lenses aren't clean going in (fats) then yes the lenses will be disinfected but not clean.

I'm a bit shocked you've been put onto monthlies, have a look at prices online for dailies.

Also make sure they're breathable, prices have come down a lot.

Move to dailies. Transformative. I

Not putting enough solution in to cover the lenses?
but yes, 100% switch to dailies. I get mine from daysoft for about £15 a month

I wear monthly disposables and use any all purpose cleaning solution. Add solution to lens in palm of hand and rub gently a few times then rinse and put into lens case with solution to fill. Have never had an issue.

When I first had soft lenses (nearly 40 years ago) I had cleaning solution which I had to rub the lenses with, then storage solutions, then protein removal tablets that I had to do once a month.

Do you not have anything to clean them with as well as the storage solution, or can you not clea with the storage solution before storing?

I've always had monthlies since switching from gas permeable about 15 years ago. Its worth trying different solutions out, mine are silicone hydrogels so i just check on the label that it is suitable for them. Give them a gentle rub with solution before soaking them. I have no desire to switch to dailies, not even sure I could due to a complex prescription.

So you use the peroxide solution to rub gently and then rinse with what?

definitely using enough solution to cover the lenses.

I need a weird prescription so monthlies are the best option for me right now.

Noooo don't use the peroxide solution you'll burn your eyes
you need to buy some regular saline for rinsing

This. You need to rub very gently before soaking. Then lightly rinse with same solution and store completely covered in fresh solution.

The idea is not so much to coat the lens with something but rather to roll it about a bit so that any deposits crack iyswim. A bit like getting a thin layer of dried paint off a sheet of clingfilm.

Dailies are great but they are not made in all prescriptions (sadly).

Purpleavocado · 21/12/2022 07:41

My prescription is very high, but I can still use dailies, monthly lenses were awful

EspeciallyD · 21/12/2022 07:51

I’ve never used a peroxide based solution, but yes, a gentle rub with solution with your little finger in the palm of your hand before rinsing with more solution and soaking in more is what I do. Always leave the case to dry out when wearing the lenses too.

Just a thought - could it be make-up or skin cream getting onto them during wear? I never use eye-liner on my waterlines for this reason.

mincepiepie · 21/12/2022 08:04

I went from gas to soft due to astigmatism.

Anyway, if you are using a onestep cleaner / soaker clean the lens in the palm of you hand first then rinse and soak with the same solution.

You can buy devices that clean the lenses like a tiny cleaning machine!

I actually had mine lasered but that's not what you are asking.

mincepiepie · 21/12/2022 08:09

The one that you are using isn't a multipurpose. It uses a neutralising disc in the lens case so I wonder why they have given you that one if there is a specific reason.

I'm not sure you would be able to agitate this in the palm of your hand. I'd try a different cleaner. I had to play around with a few. I liked the all in one clean -rinse -store -rinse solitons for soft lenses
