Where do the kitchen scissors go?

I try to always have a lot of pairs of kitchen scissors. The reason is that I am a quilter so I have special scissors that are for fabric only. They are generally sitting out in the open on my sewing machine. The family know that it's certain misery and possible death to touch my fabric scissors, but if they can't find a pair in the kitchen they will 'just quickly' use whatever they can find (as though the speed of using my fabric scissors means they won't ruin them Hmm).

Anyway, I noticed that we were down to the last two pairs of kitchen scissors, so I ordered some more. Because I've been having some pain in my right hand I splashed out and ordered two pairs of soft-touch Oxo Good Grips scissors. They arrived yesterday afternoon, by yesterday evening I only had one pair of Oxo scissors in the kitchen. Which is a record even in my house.

Also cutlery, where does it go? I suspect that having teenagers is the answer to all of my whys, but they maintain it's nothing to do with them.

This is a very nice thread and it's good to see the severity aimed by many at the sort of people who don't quite understand about the sewing scissors.

See also:

  • the extra-sharp wound-dressing scissors for cutting dressing pads, bandages etc. in the first-aid box, that should not be treated as the default scissors of last resort when all the kitchen ones have gone AWOL
  • my best tweezers, that DP used whenever he thought I wasn't looking to slit the tape holding together newly-delivered cardboard boxes, as a makeshift substitute for a flathead screwdriver, and for general prying/stabbing tasks, which he has yet to be fully forgiven for (the replacement best tweezers are well-hidden)

My missing scissors, usually end up in teen dds room although she will absolutely deny having ever touched them.
I have to hide my craft and hair scissors or I’ll never see them again, only I know where they are. But dd and dh both have an uncanny knack of sniffing out any hidden object in this house no matter where I’ve hidden them!

A padlock is a bloody genius idea!

Missing cutlery usually ends up in the bin again due to careless dd!

The kitchen scissors are supposed to live in a ceramic pot on the kitchen windowsill but nine times out of ten they will be left at the arse of the person who used them last.

My missing kitchen scissors all reappeared when DD left home to set up for herself. They are very happy in the kitchen drawer.

Teaspoons get binned with the yoghurt pots in my experience.

The OP's eye on the fabric scissors reminds of the short story "Seventy-Two Derwent's" where there are very precious fabric scissors that come in handy for sorting out a nasty man. As an aside, it's a story that had my Year 12s on the edge of their seats when I read it aloud.

I've come back to this thread to say that yesterday I needed to open a package in the kitchen and the only two scissors that I could find were a pair of children's scissors shaped like a ladybird and a pair of herb scissors (five blades on each side). There was one pair in dishwasher waiting to be washed, but the others have gone. The response to "Does anyone know where all the pairs of scissors have gone?" was "Not me/No" from the DC and "They're around somewhere" from DH. The ladybird scissors did the trick, eventually.

I'm going to order a few more pairs of the Oxo soft grip ones. Hmm

I strongly suspect that our many missing kitchen scissors are hiding in the garage.

That's where mine are usually to be found...

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/01/2023 14:45

We don't have a garage. I don't know why as every other house on the road has one (all built at the same time by the same builder), and when I looked up the plans there was a garage on the planning application.

Perhaps there was once a garage but a teenage family member borrowed it and forgot where they left it. Grin

We just have lots of scissors - which works well.
Kitchen scissors live in the kitchen drawer x 2
DS1s LH scissors in his room
Craft scissors in craft box
General paper cutting scissors in box by the phone with sellotape
Sewing and embroidery scissors in my sewing box (have different coloured handles to all other scissors so cannot be used by mistake and if they are people suffer)
Nail scissors in a weird little holder on the mantelpiece in our room
Small scissors in bathroom cabinet with bandages
Garden scissors in garage and greenhouse
Then more scissors in both DH & my offices

marrymeadam · 02/01/2023 15:53

Absolutely not in my 12 year olds room, they are absolutely not all in there with all the pairs of tweezers that she also 'hasn't even touched' nope not at all

reluctantbrit · 02/01/2023 16:06

I have two pairs in the kitchen, one in the knife block and a second - most people don't know it exist, in a drawer. No issues in the last 6 years we have the current kitchen.

There are two pairs in the dining room with the sello tape and other stuff, DD has at least 2 pairs in her bedroom and DH also has one in the office.

ShrillBill · 02/01/2023 16:23

I've started putting storage on the doors (its a small house). The kitchen door now has an over the door hanger with see through pouches. I'll probably give up on it by June as none of these systems seem to catch on with the rest of the family and they'll carry on moaning they can't find anything.

bigbadbarry · 02/01/2023 16:29

I also have teenagers and no scissors, tweezers or nail clippers

SkankingWombat · 04/01/2023 14:38

I've just found a pair of ours! On the floor in DH's office under a pile of some of his clothes 🙄

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 04/01/2023 15:14

I have three teens and never lose scissors…

But where do all the screwdrivers go? Why are there never any in the tool drawer?

mondaytosunday · 20/12/2022 18:21

Teaspoons! I'm doing ok at the moment (my son's not with us - hmmmm), but goodness I had to buy a spare pack of six regularly.
My daughter did a big bedroom clean up today and our mug population suddenly doubled!

Many of our cups are missing (hence the username) and DH asked where they might be. DD may well have something to do with that. She will be holding them hostage in her room.
My scissors have a special place on the rack we have in the kitchen BUT they are gone. I found one pair last night in my makeup organiser (wasn't me) and the other pair well we can only guess.....

Don't get me started on the sewing scissors.

Don’t get me started on tweezers, I’m currently using a pair that came out of a Christmas cracker!

Athenen0ctua · 05/01/2023 18:24

Maybe the issue is too many pairs leading to carelessness. Last two means how many before?! We have one pair, bought five years ago when we moved in, never gone missing. Cutlery hasn't either, we were given cutlery and prefer to use a few particular bits of it (most is huge), DS will wash up his preferred cutlery rather than use anything else!

Me too! Thank you John Lewis

Love the thread! My specialty scissors and tweezers stopped disappearing after I made DH buy replacements in Europe for me (we live far far away from Europe and he goes there for work sometimes). I made sure that only the most expensive ones could do the job and anything other than that was simply not good enough.

One trip where he had to hunt down a specific brand for 3 items AND shell out a considerable sum for each, followed by "how can something so little cost so much money" from incredulous DH seems to have fixed the problem about 10years ago. I do wonder why 🤷‍♀️

Oh and the fabric ones are hidden well... from ALL of them 😈
