How do you cash a foreign cheque?

DH has just received some (sort of) inheritance from a relative in America. He banks with TSB and a quick Google suggests that TSB no longer accept foreign cheques.

What do we do?

Can he open an account with a bank that does accept foreign cheques?

AndrewGloubermanisaperv · 20/12/2022 13:21

Would they not be about to arrange an international transfer directly to his account?

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 20/12/2022 13:22

Get the US relatives/solicitor to transfer it electronically.

They have sent a physical cheque. It wasn't an official thing in his uncle's will, but he had discussed with his children that he'd like to leave something to DH. I don't think DH has seen his cousins for forty years so wouldn't be comfortable contacting them to ask for a bank transfer.

So, could DH just take some ID into a bank, open an account and deposit the cheque or would that send some sort of fraud alarm bells ringing?

We are very much struggling financially at present so we're keen to access the funds ASAP.

All advice appreciated.

Open a dollar account in any bank. You can use Wise. I got my US cheques sent directly to them.

OK, if you've already got the cheque, I agree with opening an account with somewhere like Wise - after checking they take cheques!.

NeonBoomerang · 20/12/2022 15:24

Sorry if I'm being a little dense... Wise is a digital thing, isn't it? So how would you cash a cheque with it?

From what I've read (and admittedly I'm struggling with brain fog due to illness at present), if he was to open an account and immediately deposit a cheque, they would have to use some sort of anti-fraud protocol and it would take six bloody weeks to cash the cheque.

Ask your bank to open a dollar account (HSBC has the option). It is just another account linked to your husband. You can deposit your cheques as normal.
