Fed up with the government and NHS

Hi all,

you may have seen my post 3 months ago about my brother in law breaking his arm quite badly and how his surgery kept getting delayed and was given inadequate pain killers to take until his surgery. Well it's been 3 months now and I'm feeling so bad for him, the government has really messed up the NHS and he's going to a neighbouring country for help.. He met with the head of ophthalmology today at a private medical centre (in desperation) who took some tests and had a look at his X-ray. The NHS doctors didn't believe that the infection has reached his bone even though it's had an abscess for a month and he's in so much pain. The ophthalmologists today has confirmed that the infection has infact reached his bone and he needs an operation as soon as possible. He also took a look at the X-rays taken after the surgery where he proceeded to let my brother in law know that the surgery performed was one of the worst he's seen, the platinum is leaving too much gaps in his bone and they had used way too many screws, his arm is absolutely not healing and he's just gone through so much with the NHS. Now a week ago he was visiting his mother in a neighbouring European country where he has dual nationality so he went to the hospital there to get checked. They said he needed an emergency operation firstly to sort out the infection in the bone and to replace the metal used in his arm. Yesterday he received 7 phone calls from the hospital there begging him to come in for an operation. They also instructed him to come in now for a blood test, and said if he couldn't come in they'd send a nurse to his house to take the bloods, but he isn't in the country so couldn't do that. He called his NHS doctor here who said IF you have a bone infection the closest operation date they have is Atleast 3 weeks away, and he has an appointment next week to determine whether the infection has reached the bone after BIL had a massive go at them. Other country dr said they'd be looking at a potential amputation if he left it that long. So, BIL is travelling tonight for his first operation tomorrow in said european country.

AIBU for fuming at the government and the NHS?

This is so awful. I’m sorry to hear he’s gone through that. The state of the NHS is genuinely terrifying at the moment. Its good at least that he has dual nationally and thought to go to hospital abroad!

Hi - I'm assuming you mean orthopaedics not ophthalmology (eye Drs). I'm sorry to hear this infections in the bone is usually a medical emergency. I hope it gets sorted.

Poor care and medical errors can and do happen in every system and is a separate issue. As for the running down of the NHS, yanbu, but we get what we vote for and I can't help thinking this is deliberate strategy of the government.

Except lots of us didn't, never have, and never would vote for this shitshow.

I 'joked' yesterday that perhaps during these strikes that it's a shame it's not possible to tell who voted Tory, and ban them from using NHS services. Not sure how much I was 'joking' though.

Sorry to hear this from a current NHS doctor and former orthopaedic trainee. I'm also sorry to say that this isn't even an unusual experience for patients these days.

The NHS has collapsed and all that is is bare bones healthcare running on fumes. I doubt that there is a single simple explanation for why that has happened but we were able to provide consistently good - even occasionally excellent - healthcare just 10 years ago.

It's certainly not the quality of care that any of us signed up to provide.

And those who did vote for this shitshow and Brexit can own every single bit of it as far as I'm concerned. Tories have only done what Tories do and this consequences of Brexit were spelled out crystal clear. The degradation of the health service and the country is 100% the fault of the voter.

This is why I still pay for health insurance in my home country. Its a mandatory requirement and DH is always saying that its so ridiculous I have to pay etc as I wouldn't go there in an emergency. Well I will show him this thread! Sorry to hear about your BIL, it is good that he is getting treatment at last!
