Tampon Sensitivity

Can anyone recommend tampons suitable for sensitive use. It appears I have over the last year developed a sensitivity to both pads and tampons. My preference is tampons but I can't use atm. I will be getting period pants in the NY but I need a back up for long days, swimming etc. Can anyone recommend some. I don't want to waste money trying different products if they are just as bad. I currently use Tampax.

There are hypoallergenic ones. Body Form (in big Boots), My Pure (these are specialist), or if you have heavy flows try doing what I do and wrap cotton gauze over a maternity pad. - it works brilliantly.

silicone cup instead?

Sensitivity as to how they feel or are you getting a rash or something?

Tampax are so uncomfortable for me, they expand lengthwise so they feel like they are poking out! Lilets are more comfortable.

I developed sensitivity to tampons and then to pads! This was before the advent of period pants, which would have been useless anyhow as my periods were so heavy by this time. I’m allergic to silicone, so moon cups were out of the question. I just had to put up with the allergic reaction from using pads - lots of sudocrem needed!

To put it bluntly it burns and it is quite painful. No rash as such just red and sore. I am fairly light and only have a three day period so pants probably are going to be best for me. But on days I work (long shifts) I will need something else to see me through. I'm reluctant to use a cup as where I work I couldn't wash it out without interruption. I'll look at hypoallergenic ones.

I find lilets so much more comfortable than tampax. Had to use a tampax recently and it irritated me a bit

Do you mind saying how old you are OP?

If it's hard to insert tampons and they hurt you, it can be caused by low estrogen which results in vaginal dryness and shrinkage.

If you are over mid-40s this could be the issue.

popperoo · 19/12/2022 15:46

Are you using the right tampon for your flow? If you're using super for a light period then I should imagine it would feel itchy as it'll be staying mostly dry. May not be the case but just a thought

CallOnMeBaby · 19/12/2022 15:52

I'm 35 soon and I have been using the yellow ones (medium?) for my flow. I only use two a day. One in the morning. Break for an hour and then one in the afternoon. I don't really leak so I don't use any at night. It's only at work I use them back to back as I can't control when I can use the restrooms at times.

It seems to be since I had a baby. I used maternity pads post birth and had a horrific time with them. Ever since then I have struggled but it is getting worse. DS is 3 now so not a recent thing.

I started to find them really uncomfortable and made me sore. Switched to a cup and haven’t looked back, I don’t notice it at all. The sound of your flow you may get away with it changing it before you leave from work and then when you get back. I’m pretty heavy and was changing tampons every few hours and now I empty my cup at lunch and when I get in. They hold a fair amount. With your age and baby they would recommend the bigger size anyway

whatisforteamum · 19/12/2022 18:40

OP I'm a few yrs post meno yet I seem to Remember the advice being use the lightest ones and change often.
When I had heavy periods then used the heavy ones as flow got lighter it caused soreness and dryness.
As far as I know this was to prevent toxic shock syndrome too.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 19/12/2022 18:46

You don't have to change a cup every 6 hours - 12 hours is fine (although tbh I've been through a few to find what suited me).

M&S do really good period pants.

There's a brand called flo that come in a little cup type container, I get mine from the big tesco but they're not in every store.
I also have success with any that come from Holland and barret but only buy on offer because they can get quite costly.
Mostly I use period knickers (and thongs now) which are fab.
