Can I cook a Christmas dinner in this?

Hello, I am thinking of buying this to cook Christmas dinner. There are four of us and we’ll be having nut roast and all the usual trimmings. Do you think this would work? Can you foresee any problems? Thanks.

Do you have any other cooking facilities?
It's going to depend on what you consider to be 'all the usual trimmings'

I have cooked Christmas dinner in one of these but had two on the go at once! Cooked stuffing and pigs the day before and reheated in the microwave. Did confit carrots on the job instead of roasting them. Had a three bird rolled roast joint instead of a turkey as a turkey wouldn't fit. You just have to think outside the box. No way would I have managed it with one though!

It's essentially a one tray oven so it will depend entirely on your menu.
I actually think it will be trickier with nut toast than meat as it doesn't require resting time.
But yes, if you have a hob and a microwave, with a few tweaks to your menu you will be able to cook your nut roast snd some roast potatoes in that and do your other accompaniments elsewhere.

No hob or microwave, just this oven.

I don’t know about nut roasts but I’m would plan to cook it first. Wrap it in foil and then a wool blanket or into your esky. Then heat up for potatoes. Salad for the rest. What is the rest of your menu?

Greengr · 19/12/2022 09:27

Might be tricky
You could make this

SantaStoleMyPies · 19/12/2022 09:33

Nope, not without a hob I think.

The problem is the usual trimmings all tend to need space around them to crisp up (like, roast potatoes).

You might get away with doing the nut roast first and leaving it well covered in foil and towels to stay warm while you cook the rest. And then limiting the trimmings to 'just roast pots and parsnips'.

If you want yorkies then getting the premade ones and just heating them up right at the end?

All other veggies would have to be boiled/steamed but you don't have the hob to do that.

I'd personally be tempted to change the menu totally to something that can be cooked well in one pot/tray.

PingPongMerrilyWithPie · 19/12/2022 09:44

You can get away with the protein being less than piping hot if you serve with hot gravy, but without the hob or microwave that is going to be difficult.

It would be much easier if you also have access to a slow cooker or steamer, or if you bought one of the ovens that had a couple of hob rings on top. But just a single oven tray is very limiting.

DancingSober · 19/12/2022 09:46

Could you cook your veg and nut roast at the same time? How many people are eating?

DancingSober · 19/12/2022 09:47

Oh sorry! You already said four people.

Hmmm probably not enough room for a tray big enough for nut roast plus veg for four. Maybe do as others suggest and cook the nut roast first and keep it warm somehow. How are you planning to make gravy with no hob?

BruceAndNosh · 19/12/2022 09:56

I was totally expecting this thread to be asking "will the wide sleeves of this dress dip into the gravy while I'm stirring it?"

toomuchlaundry · 19/12/2022 09:59

How are you cooking things at the moment?

AlJalilia · 19/12/2022 10:49

@BruceAndNosh 😁

Are you in Australia, OP?* If so, could you do something more suitable for hot weather? BBQ? I have to say in your circumstances, regardless of where you are, I'd be forgoing a normal Christmas dinner. I was going to suggest a one-pot/dish meal like veggie lasagne but without a hob the early stages could be tricky. Not unmanageable with a bit of thought and planning, I suppose. Good luck!

*Basing this on the fact that the link goes to an Australian website.

AlJalilia · 19/12/2022 19:36

Yes, we’re in Australia and the weather is forecast to be atrocious so a BBQ is out of the question.
