Insomnia at in laws

It's officially 5am and despite going to bed at midnight I have yet to go to sleep. This is nothing new, I am a regular insomniac and have just upped my epilepsy medication which always sets off a period of shit sleep for me.

Current issue is I'm not at home! We're staying with DP Family so I can't do my usual getting up, making a sandwich, having a bath routine which normally works. They have large dogs who sleep in the kitchen and will wake up if I venture down there and don't feel I can help myself to things anyway,I have just been LYING here, hungry and thirsty, occasionally looking at my phone and being furious with my stupid brain.

DP and our dog ofc snoring away next to me which only makes the whole situation 10 times worse!

@Beansonbeans

poor you feel for you.
just one night you are staying?

WhatWouldHopperDo · 19/12/2022 05:35

Insomniac here too. It’s awful isn’t it? Like being trapped in bed. What time do you think the rest of the house will be up?

I did fall asleep but woke up about 1 and been awake since.

Are you going to be able to get some rest later today?

Beansonbeans · 19/12/2022 05:36

No unfortunately tomorrow night too Xmas Confused I tend not to have two terrible nights in a row but who knows... might have to bring a packed lunch to bed tomorrow!

I have gone to last resorts and turned around in bed so my feet are nestled next to DPs face- serve her right for sleeping so well!

If it gets to half 6 might just give up and take the dogs out...

We're going to a Christmas market today so not real chance of rest although might be able to wangle a pre dinner nap.

It's infuriating!

Commiserations OP. Insomnia is awful and so much worse outside of home. Get stocked up for tonight with food and anything side that might help eg podcasts and headphones. A sandwich in the night can make all the difference!

Bagpuss2022 · 19/12/2022 06:01

Know how your feeling this is the 6th night for me I even have zopiclone but they don’t work now
so much worse in someone else’s house I want a sandwich now might be time to get up another day or functioning as a zombie

Feeling the pain here too! I did manage about 10-1 but been up ever since, 37 weeks pregnant and with heartburn so a lovely start to the day.

Nearly time to take the dogs out OP, I hope you manage to enjoy your day at the markets! Very mild weather here today in Yorkshire, 12 degrees already, so hopefully you have similar temps and it'll make for a lovely day.

Big thanks for the sympathies- makes it so much better knowing I'm not the only one.

Preparing for dog walk and have cheered myself up immensely after remembering all three dogs have light up collars SIL brought so they'll be like a little mobile light display on the field.

Next burning question is how to answer the 'how did you sleep question?'
Do you a) tell the truth 'didn't sleep a bloody wink Sandra!'
Or b) lie 'ooh lovely thanks!'

I feel for you! I have learned to be prepared, I take a pill to help me sleep and I always take snacks of some kind in my bag. I find most people's spare beds incredibly uncomfortable as well (too hard) so I also take a thin foam mattress rolled up in the car so that I can bring it in if my first impression is that the bed is going to be too hard for me.

Oneborneverydecade · 19/12/2022 07:05

I'd like to recommend The Sleep Book by Guy Meadows but I'm aware that most people with insomnia have probably tried everything.

It has helped me after an, admittedly short, period of difficult sleep following a panic attack.

Sympathies OP.
Be honest so everyone understands why you’re not with it.
