Something to listen to to help me sleep

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 18/12/2022 21:44

I really struggle to go to sleep, my mind won't switch off. I'd like to listen to something that will send me to sleep, but no lyrics, or guided meditation or podcast, I concentrate too much then. Ideally some music without lyrics on Spotify. There's plenty on there, but it's all classical.

I don't even know what I'm looking for. I just need to sleep more than I am doing! If I listen to audio books I get the annoying thing where I spell the words in my head, same with lyrics and guided meditation just makes me anxious.

Any suggestions would be great 😊

Have you tried the calm app or headspace? The bbc sounds app also has sleep mixes.

Angharad78 · 18/12/2022 21:46

sleep Forecast on BBC Sounds.

Findyourneutralspace · 18/12/2022 21:46

I’m a big fan of desert island discs. It’s interesting enough to keep my focus but gentle enough to fall asleep.

Otherwise, try the Sleeping Forecast, which is more musicy but not classical.

Or Cinematic Orchestra if you want straight out music on Spotify.

The Calm app has lots of instrumental/ soundscapes or you could search lo fi instrumental on Spotify.

If you like classical music Chopin is really nice.

I know you said no talky tracks...but Liberation in Mind on YouTube is good and the Jerome Flynn 'Softly Back To Sleep' track is foolproof.

Rummikub · 18/12/2022 21:48

Storm or rain sounds. I use the Sleepiest App and have it set to just under comfortable hearing. My mind then has to reach for the sounds and I switch off and sleep within 15 mins.

Pick a tv show you've seen many times. Listen to that. You can tuck the phone face down so the light doesn't annoy you, and you know the show so well you don't need to look at it.

Eatentoomanyroses · 18/12/2022 21:53

I use this one and it actually has meant I’ve been able to come off sleeping pills

I used to listen to the radio or tv but Id end up with poor quality sleep.
The app I use has a 15 or 30 minute timer on and as it’s not words it seems to work best for me.

feliciabirthgiver · 18/12/2022 22:03

Insight Timer is an amazing app full of sleep resources, lots of meditations but also lots of sleep music, sends me off every single time.

Fifiesta · 18/12/2022 22:16

Sleep Sounds with Jamie Dornan. The Mexican beach one has never failed to send me to the land of nod. ( There are about 6 different stories on one download).
I got it free on Audible & set the sleep timer to 30 mins so my iPad doesn’t run all night.
A controversial bonus is the next day you can legitimately state that you’ve slept with Jamie Dornan…

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 18/12/2022 22:16

Thanks for all the replies. I've used Calm and Headspace. The problem is if they're talking I can't switch off and a lot of them are too short too. It can take me over an hour to go to sleep.

I like to use my google Speaker so I can put my phone away from the bed , so Spotify is best.

I'll try the Insight timer app though.

I've tried having TV I know I'm the background but it doesn't help.

How about above and beyond? Flow state.

SabbatWheel · 18/12/2022 22:25

I use brown noise on the Alexa for 15 mins. Gone.

SnoozyLucy7 · 18/12/2022 22:46

Brown noise, pink noise, green
noise. I’ve found this effective for switching of my brain and falling asleep fairly quickly

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 18/12/2022 22:51

Sleep forecast on bbc sounds. Can set a timer on there and add multiple shows to the playlist.

Rummikub · 18/12/2022 22:51

What are all these colours of noises? I’ve only heard of white noise.

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 18/12/2022 22:52

Oops it's the sleeping forecast.

‘Get sleepy’ podcasts are effective

Whataretheodds · 18/12/2022 22:56

Brown noise

'relaxing piano' playlist on Spotify or similar

Might it work if you listen to an audiobook in another language?

ItsMeHiImTheProblem · 19/12/2022 17:29

I tried listening to nature sounds last night but my cats could hear it and kicked up a fuss outside the bedroom door 😩 didn't exactly help me sleep! I'm loath to wear headphones, ear buds cos none of them are really comfortable. I've even got a headband one, but it's not great and is still uncomfortable.

I use a free app called Yoga Nidra Lite. On there is a meditation exercise that I find works most of the time, it's only 10 minutes and well worth listening to. You have to think about different parts of your body. My doctor recommended it as he uses it too

nobodygirl2023 · 19/12/2022 17:43

I listen to white noise on Spotify but I need fan or train sounds rather than nature/rainfall etc - always helps me drift off and also blocks out any unwanted sounds too. I also use to help me focus at work when i need to zone in.

NoShrunking · 19/12/2022 17:45

Search brown noise on Spotify and there are loads of 12 hour stretches. Works a treat!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/12/2022 17:45

I listen to history books on audible - the historian Dan Jones is particularly good at sending me to sleep while he tries to educate me about the Plantagenets or the Wars of the Roses.
