Sudden vomiting and back pain

Has just come on in the last hour ... d&v with middle back pain and discomfort under ribs. Does this sound like kidney trouble? I've been fine all weekend till now. Negative covid test.

And if it is kidney trouble, will it go away by itself?

OH had lots of extreme back pain followed by throwing up, he felt better after throwing up, turned out to be gall stones.

GordonsAlive85 · 18/12/2022 21:11

I was going to say gallstones too from the sounds of it.

Flapjackquack · 18/12/2022 21:11

I was going to stay gallstones. I get incredible pain under the ribs and in my back, can hand on heart say worse than childbirth, and vomiting due to the cramping. An attack can last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours.

Definitely like when I had gallstones

scrumpledtitskin · 18/12/2022 21:16

I had this last night, currently waiting to have my gallbladder out as I have gallstones.
Generally lasts about 5/6 hours for me and I'm convinced I'm having a heart attack 😱🙈

scrumpledtitskin · 18/12/2022 21:18

And yes, worse than childbirth for me too. Awful pain, I feel for you.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2022 21:19

I'm throwing gallstones into the ring too ....

Iam4eels · 18/12/2022 21:23

Sudden severe pain with vomiting that's not relieved by OTC painkillers needs to be assessed by a professional. I'd either give out of hours a call or go to the nearest walk-in.

silentflight · 18/12/2022 21:23

I don't think I've ever had gallstones. Will they get better without treatment and how long will it take?

OP posts:
Iam4eels · 18/12/2022 21:24

If it is gallstones then the only definitive treatment is surgery to remove your gallbladder. It's fairly straightforward (day case usually) and low risk but they'd discuss that with you if it is gallstones.

Hugasauras · 18/12/2022 21:25

Could also be a kidney stone. Having been lucky enough to have both kidney stones and gall stones, kidney stones IME are much more painful and are around your lower back, whereas gallstone pain is much higher up. Gallstones were very sore but not excruciating; kidney stones my DH had to call an ambulance as I was screaming in pain. Worse than labour!

In case it is kidney stones, drink as much water as you can manage to try flush it out!

Jaybird43 · 18/12/2022 21:26

Sounds gallbladder related to me (nurse)

BettyOBarley · 18/12/2022 21:26

I thought gallstones too as soon as I read your title. It's awful.

Once you've got them they won't get better unfortunately, although you can go a while between attacks if you're careful with your diet (not the best time of year for that!)

Weirdly Buscopan helped me a bit when I was waiting for surgery...

IncessantNameChanger · 18/12/2022 21:26

Oh... I was thinking of your heart.

NorthernChinchilla · 18/12/2022 21:39

Definitely gallbladder, could be infected/inflamed?

PieonaBarm · 18/12/2022 21:41

When I had kidney failure I had vomiting that increased in frequency over a week until I couldn't keep anything down but absolutely no pain at all.

I believe kidney stones are very painful though.

Fluffluff · 18/12/2022 21:45

Not necessarily gallstones may be sphincter of Oddi isues or pancreatiris

silentflight · 18/12/2022 21:46

Just been sick again and another bout of diarrhoea. Do gallstones cause diarrhoea then? There's a constant ache in the centre of my upper stomach too although having the D&V seems to have alleviated the pressure a little. I've now got a hot water bottle pressed to my back. It doesn't feel heart related.

Another gallstone vote - hopefully the pain subsides soon OP but get a GP referral for an ultrasound Flowers

Iam4eels · 18/12/2022 21:48

You need proper medical advice, OP.

It could be gallstones, it could be your heart, it could be pancreatitis, it could be a hundred things in-between but the symptoms you have described need assessment by a medic not the Chat board on MN.

achara · 18/12/2022 21:49

Sounds like infected gallstones. Had this 4vyears ago and had gall bladder removed

Ineedachangerightnow · 18/12/2022 21:50

Sounds like gallstones but because it can easily cause pancreatitis and the 2 get mixed up, and this is your first attack please go to hospital.

Mariposista · 18/12/2022 22:12

Gosh if it is gallstones that must be very painful. However I had similar with food poisoning. The pain was coming from trapped air, as my stomach was so empty from 20+ trips to the loo and throwing up. It was in my whole chest, not just stomach.
Please see a doctor OP
