Have house rent prices gone sky high, in the last 6-12 months ?

was trying to help a friend look for a flat or house to rent and was so shocked at the price
v small 2 bed flat 800per month above a shop
3 bed houses at least 1200 per month

seems ridiculous

Have you not been reading the news?? Yes rents have gone up a lot for many reasons. Lots of landlords are selling up which has reduced housing stock. Interest rates increasing has also added to rent rises.

someone will be along in a minute to do a rant about greedy landlords too.

Mini avoid the news as it causes me anxiety

i obviously know thkngs are going up in general
but I wasn’t aware landlords are sellin up

is this because of house prices dropping ?

so the lack of rentals pushed th e price then ?

Combination. Landlords selling while prices were high, meant less houses to rent, driving up price. Now mortgages going up meaning costs being passed to tenant. Covid meaning lots of landlords out of pocket as tenants stopped paying and no support with evicting, meaning more landlords getting out of the business. Add in new laws coming in to protect tenants (good of course) means lots also leaving the business. I'm a tenant BTW. In the last 18 months have had to move twice due to landlords selling and my rent has increased 50%.

Oddly, we had two houses to rent in the village where I live both of which were at lower rents than they’d previously been rented out at. Took ages to go also.
