Ok, this is maybe a bit weird and niche, but I’m hoping some mumsnetter may be able to put me out of my misery.
The National Gallery has recently restored Piero della Francesca’s “Nativity.” Jonathan Jones, The Guardian’s art critic, has written a very negative piece on the restoration (amp.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2022/dec/17/national-gallery-botched-restoration-nativity).
Ok…
But I am convinced that I read a piece by him, maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago, praising the restoration (I seem to recall, for instance, his noting that the restoration makes sense of the donkey’s raised head as a stream of light illuminating the nativity scene has become visible).
However, I can find no sign of this positive piece.
Did I dream this? Some kind of weird anticipatory déjà-vu? I didn’t even know the National Gallery had been restoring the piece before reading this apparently non-existent earlier review, so it feels even stranger.
Or has JJ done a volte-face, and somehow eradicated his earlier piece, now judging it a faux-pas?
Did anyone else see this previous article, or did I imagine it?
Please help!
