Put them in a bowl of water. If they float - no but if not then yes. It's only best before, not use by

monkeysonthemoon · 18/12/2022 10:47

I never bother looking at the date on eggs, I check by dropping them in a tall glass of water - if they sink they are fine, if they float then in the bin they go!

Findyourneutralspace · 18/12/2022 10:47

Yes, but you can check by putting them in a bowl of water. If they float, chuck them, if not….crack on

IncessantNameChanger · 18/12/2022 10:47

I would. Mine are often just past their best. After a next I wouldn't. I'm sure they still safe but not as nice

Perennis · 18/12/2022 10:47

Of course. To check eggs put in water. If they float don't eat them. If they sink they are fine.

Theunamedcat · 18/12/2022 10:48

The rule is if they float its a nope so jug of water pop them in if they sink your good to go

But two days? I would just crack on

Clymene · 18/12/2022 10:48

Of course. They're best before, not toxic after.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 18/12/2022 10:48

Yup

MulledWineAndMingePies · 18/12/2022 10:49

Eggs and cheese are the two things I happily eat weeks and weeks out of date

Mischance · 18/12/2022 10:49

Good grief! - 16th December! - is that all? Mine are weeks old - I just sniff them as I crack them and if they smell OK then all is well.

Glassofwhatever · 18/12/2022 10:49

Of course they'll be fine 😒

Icedlatteplease · 18/12/2022 10:49

Yep after the egg floating in water check

ItsRainingCatsAndDogsAgain · 18/12/2022 10:50

Of course. It is a best before date not a use by date.

bloodywhitecat · 18/12/2022 10:52

My chickens don't lay eggs with date stamps so I probably frequently eat eggs that would be past their commercial use by date. Your eggs will be fine.

ItsRainingCatsAndDogsAgain · 18/12/2022 10:57

How do you think humans survived before the recent dawn of best before and use by dates? Are we losing our ability to look, smell and taste food and to use our common sense? They are responsible for so much unnecessarily wasted food, especially when some people are going hungry even here in the wealthy UK or being forced to use food banks.

cheshirecatssmile · 18/12/2022 10:57

I just boil them , then we have something for lunch's during the week. They keep for an extra 7 days in the fridge

SallyWD · 18/12/2022 11:00

Absolutely

LemonsAndCherries · 18/12/2022 11:01

If they've been kept in the fridge, yes!

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 18/12/2022 11:01

Yes. I don't usually look at dates on eggs

If you are worried, crack them individually into a small bowl first. An off egg is VERY easy to smell and see - and I know this because I've had an offer egg that was well within date.

Celloma · 18/12/2022 11:05

I often eat eggs weeks out of date as long as they don't float.

PurpleParrotfish · 18/12/2022 11:07

I keep my eggs in the fridge and if they’re, say, two weeks after the best before date I wouldn’t even bother doing a float test. Never had a bad one.

We need a better balance somehow between useful information to keep track of food and letting some people think they need to chuck out food which is absolutely fine!
