What is wrong with these swelled toes?

NC for my disgusting toes 🙈 for a little while now my toes have been seriously sensitive and often swelled up and very painful. If something briefly touches my toe it's very painful. It is both feet. The other week I just couldn't walk/put my foot down for days. It seems likely to be related to the cold but I don't remember suffering this bad in previous years. Any ideas what this could be/treatment? My mum suggested it could be chillblaines but they are not really itchy which is a main symptom of that so I don't think it is. I haven't been able to see the GP about this yet, may try and get booked in if there's something that can be done about it.

From experience that looks vascular to me - I had similar last year with my foot too and ended up having major surgery to remove blood clots in both my legs and aorta. See GP asap

Chillbains? It kinda looks like you have rosy/purple spots among the swelling. Are they itchy/itch more when you are somewhere warm - like in bed?

Chilblains?

Chilblains. They are awful, you have my sympathy.

A folk remedy is to wee on them. It er worked for a 'friend'.

JennyForeigner · 17/12/2022 19:02

I never found them itchy BTW, just very painful.

GetOffTheRoof · 17/12/2022 19:06

Have you considered gout? It can affect smaller toes as well as the big toe.

Eyerollcentral · 17/12/2022 19:14

@hollyjollychristmass have you got psoriasis by any chance? ‘Sausage toes’ are often a symptom of psoriatic arthritis. Pain in my feet, esp when cold, and swollen toes, particularly the smaller ones, were the first indicator I had the condition. Definitely make an appointment with your GP and they can do bloods for the markers

hollyjollychristmass · 17/12/2022 19:18

I hadn't considered gout, will look it up. I don't suffer with psoriasis either. Odd but not sure if it's related but my toenails just don't grow at the minute either, not for months. I'm quite warm now and they're still not really itchy.

This might as well be a picture of my toes, OP. They're chilblains, horrible painful little swellings. Very common this time of year.

Keep your feet warm and dry, apply witch Hazel to help with the pain and swelling and cut back on alcohol if you drink regularly - you may not drink, but I find it makes them worse. Nelson's chilblain cream is also excellent.

Bloops · 17/12/2022 19:21

Chillblains, they don't always itch. I have raynauds and currently have them on my fingers. Agony!

hollyjollychristmass · 17/12/2022 19:24

Just looked up some pictures of chilblains and they do actually look very similar to some of the images that come up so it does sound likely to be this just without the itching. I had never even heard of it before my mum mentioned it. Will try some witch hazel on them, thankfully I've really not been interested in drinking lately!

Covid toes? Think it can go on for a while if you have ever had covid.

Bestcatmum · 17/12/2022 19:27

Raynayds disease.

MrsCarson · 17/12/2022 19:35

Dh has this at the minute too. He says they hurt. Trying to get him to wear more than a pair of socks is hard. He finally agreed he needs good warm slippers today. So I have ordered some. He's now in thick wool socks and some thin soft shoes in the house.
I hope you can get yours sorted and warmed up. I hadn't heard of using witch hazel. I'll see if we have some.

Never heard of this either! But I've just done a Google image search and they do look very similar to a few pics. I did have Covid august 2021 (sense of smell is still not right all this time later) but I don't recall having this issue last year in the winter, though my memory is certainly a bit fuzzy as I had a newborn!

I really hate socks I must admit, don't know what it is about them but I just hate the feel of them on my feet and usually take them off the minute I get home. I've do have some fluffy slippers I sometimes wear so will try and wear them a lot more to keep warm.

They look like the chilblains on my hands, I have Raynauds and they are particularly bad at the moment.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/12/2022 19:45

Chilblains. You need to keep your feet from getting too cold and keep moving to improve your circulation.

OhAmBackAgain · 17/12/2022 20:01

yeah looks like chilblains, I have them on my toes at the moment too, painful and burning, in previous years they have been itchy aswell.

When they get really bad I smoother them in a really thick layer of sudacrem put cotton wool over them and bandage the end of my feet, before going to bed. Usually 80% better in the morning.

Then it's just a case of trying to keep my feet dry and warm to stop them flaring up again, not that easy when you work outside though.

JamesGiantPledge1 · 17/12/2022 20:10

Chilblains - put sudocrem on them which works brilliantly. Within 12 hours they will be less swollen and you’ll feel better.

RopeyOldBird · 17/12/2022 20:20

Chilblains. I suffered with them for years until I discovered that donating blood clears them completely. Apparently its something to do with blood cell renewal.
