Mum is having an Endoscopy - why?

I can't gwt head nor tail out of Dad and mum rarely speaks to me (long story)

She had some tests (urine, poo, bloods) last Tuesday (because of blood in her wee according to Dad but who knows knows) and the hospital called Friday asking her to go for an endoscopy this coming Tuesday

Dad mentioned tests for ovarian cancer but would that involve an endoscopy?

I'm clueless about medical procedures but am I right to worry given the speed they're having her in for this? How soon will we know if it's sinister?

Oh - hadn't thought of that. Dad thinks it's a camera down her throat. I'll ask him again

Endoscopy is camera either down throat or nose to check out what's going on from stomach upwards.

Thanks for the info

Is the speed at which she's been called in an indication of how concerned to be? She's 74 and struggles to hear so is apparent confused by the phone call she received inviting her in

Endoscopy means putting a camera into part of the body to have a look around. It could be the upper GI tract (oeaophago-gastro-duodenoscopy) or nose throat (nasendoscopy) as PP suggested (although the latter doesn’t really make any sense in the context of what you’ve described). It could also be an endoscopy of the bladder (cystoscopy), uterus (hysteroscopy) or lower GI tract (colonoscopy). There’s really not enough in your post to say what’s going on though. FWIW it’s not that uncommon for cancellations to happen at this time of year so it may just be that there’s an underfilled list that they could squeeze her on to. HTH.

Someone I know had this recently due to reflux - any issues with reflux?

Oh the typos! 😱hopefully you still get the idea of what I meant!

Hi

On my ward we often arrange for endoscopies when there is a concern of an upper GI bleed. Perhaps as well as blood in the urine, it could also be in the faeces ? Blood tests to suggest a bleed would be an acutely low haemoglobin level (if your parents mentioned that)

I hope all is well

Endoscopy is a camera down the throat.

My dad had one as he had a suspected stomach ulcer (was vomiting blood and had terrible acid reflux).

Thank you everyone

Sorry about the sketchy details, I'm trying to get info from dad but he seems quite unsure too. I'm chewed to bits over it all - our relationship is complicated but we have been close and I do still love her.
