Am I allowed to drive with someone else with me having never seen an instructor?

As the title says.

I have a provisional license but can’t afford lessons.

My dad is happy to take me out in his car with him in the passenger seat just until I can afford lessons but is this allowed?

Context in case relevant: Dads been driving since he was 17 (now in his 60s) and has a HGV license although doesn’t drive lorries since he retired a few years ago.

I don't plan to take my test until I've been with an instructor though, it would purely be for practise once or twice a week.

Yes

Stichintime · 17/12/2022 17:54

It's fine, as long as you use L plates.

MithrilCostsMore · 17/12/2022 17:54

As long as you are insured on the car then yes.

Yes, good luck!

L plates and insurance, and you're good to go.

Depends on what your relationship with your dad is like, if he's chill and relaxed go for it, if hes uber critical and will make you cry then maybe wait for an instructor.

yes this is allowed. i learned like this with my dad, practicing the basics and then getting driving lessons before the test.

but actually, I wouldn't recommend it. I ended up needing more lessons than I expected because I learned "bad habits" when getting started without an instructor, and it took me a long time to unlearn that and remember the approved techniques.

it would be better to start with half the total number of lessons you intend to pay for to get you started, and then do lots of practice with your dad once you have a good grasp of what you need to practice, then have the second half of the lessons for a final polish.

It's fine, practise in an empty car park or really quiet part of town.

It's been a while but I think the general pattern of my lessons was:
Lesson 1 the instructor drove me to a quiet area where he went through the car controls, moving off, pulling over and safely stopping.
Lesson 2 was a recap and then driving around a quiet industrial estate which was perfect for practising junctions and left and right turns.
Lesson 3 I started to drive home from the area
Lesson 4 I started on roundabouts
Future lessons I drove the whole time and my lessons started to be booked during busier road times, down narrower roads and more rural roads as well as dual carriageways and during poorer weather conditions.

Go out with your dad during good weather at a quiet time like Sunday morning. You don't want to be dealing with traffic, don't expect to be a good driver straight away.

@FaazoHuyzeoSix I can't afford any lessons at all at the moment, I'm a single parent and there's just too many outgoings so I'll be waiting a while. At least this way I can start to get used to driving.
