Does anyone here take Buscopan?

I had a bad, bad DnV bug last week of Nov/ start of Dec. Like, being ill every 3-5 mins. Was horrid!

When it passed, I was left with nasty cramps all throughout my abdomen, esp v early in the morning, like 4am, weirdly. I started taking ibuprofen to cope with them, but after a week or so thought that wasn't a good long-term solution, so rang GP.

GP was very nice and said I was right to ring, but could use a OTC medication called Buscopan. She said it was an anti-spasmodic for the gut. I have been taking it as directed for 3 days now but it hasn't made a jot of difference and if anything, symptoms are getting worse.

Has anyone else taken this? Does it take a while to kick in or should I go back?

I’ve never found Buscopan effective

DD takes it for period cramps,as did I and my mother. Helps directly.

Look for other reasons.

Hmm okay-- might ring GP again on Monday and ask if there is anything different.

I use it. The cramps don't go but do lessen. I end up taking more than the box suggests which is probably not a good idea.

I use it after a dairy infestation. It reduces the severity of inflammatory pain/diarrhoea and the time from a week to three days. I have been known to take in a fairly high dose, but. michaelschemist.com.au/search?q=Buscopan Normal Buscopan I would double the dose and Buscopan Forte I would have one every 4-6 hours.

Not medical here but would suggest that if you are receiving no relief then it is not acting on the bit that ails you and going back to the dr would be good.

I’m just rereading your post. It sounds to me as if you have a few “points” of tenderness along your intestinal tract after your d/v. It may be now irritated as your food passes over it. Does your pain come in waves like peristalsis? I get it starting at about 3 am because that’s when my body is working. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt but I can’t sleep through it. Then I can get awful days (not much now because it’s been years working my way through it). But I can remember curling into the foetal position while peristalsis moved over the point.

Buscopan lessens your peristalsis (from experience) which reduces your experience. If that not happening, then, yes to a medical follow up. Or check your diet.

I now rarely eat anything with a high level of roughage - oats, beetroot, pumpkin, seeds, nuts, pulses or laxatives such as mango. I can move my bowels up to 7 times per day on that lot. But I am post menopausal and my skin thinning, I think, has started in my lower intestine.

Buscopan worked for me when I have IBS from underactive thyroid. It can be taken in much higher doses than the over the counter one. It is also available on prescription btw.

Creatingusernamesismygame · 16/12/2022 16:41

Buscopan doesn’t work for me. Cocodamol OTC worked well for the cramps. I had a similar bug few months ago. Took 7-14 days for the diarrhoea to stop. Was starting to feel better but took ibuprofen for cramps. Took them for few days and all my D/V symptoms came back with vengeance. Ibuprofen can make digestive issues worse.

Hi, thanks everyone. I think I will experiment with taking a highee dose of Buscopan and then see if it hasn't helped after the weekend.

@TheSandgroper yes that sounds right but I am confused as to why it is 4am. I normally eat my last meal.c 430-5pm so that is almost 12h after last eating and it is all through the tract, not just 1-2 places. Hmm!

Buscopan doesn't work for me either, but if I am feeling that way one
low dose of codeine before bed helps.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 16/12/2022 18:41

Thanks - I'm intolerant of codeine so can't have it, hence ibuprofen instead.

Just to say thanks to those who recommended upping the dose of Buscopan.

I took 3 last night with paracetamol and things are a lot better since then - not normal but not waking at 4am in pain! So thanks, as I wouldn't have done that on my own.
