Luxury cottages - do any even exist in the north west

christmasprep · 16/12/2022 09:07

Looking at booking one as a Christmas gift for mum and dad. Ideally Chester but they seem none existent there, so casting net to Cheshire or the north west generally and not much coming up. Surely something must exist!

(Not wales!)

Two others I occasionally look at but also can't afford!

Yes I know- but you compare a view of shuttlingsloe with say snowdonia, Conwy , or Lake District or we’ll into the Pennines in Derbyshire it pretty average and not what I’d call stunning - it’s nice, beats a view of Runcorn, queensferry but stunning it ain’t
that’s why we have national parks - the Cheshire parts of Pennines barely touch that

Merlott · 16/12/2022 12:54

There are tons 😂

You want an agency I bet and you will need to book 2y in advance?!!!

anonzzzzzzzzzzzzz · 16/12/2022 12:56

Sits down with popcorn

Merlott · 16/12/2022 12:59

Nope. Once you get past Watford, there's nothing but mud huts and shacks. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Justisme · 16/12/2022 13:21

Ha shame to all the northerners who assumed op was down south.

Just goes to show Londoners are and always will be better..

TellMeWhere · 16/12/2022 13:24

What dates are you looking at? The really nice places often need booking at least a year in advance, if you're looking at peak time. I really want to stay at Eagle Brae in Scotland.

crosstalk · 16/12/2022 13:29

Have you tried any of the National Trust sites?

SquirrelFan · 16/12/2022 14:02

@Merlott -can you please recommend an agency? I am sick of trying to find holiday accommodation in the UK and would gladly hand money over to a travel agent to do the donkey work! When I search travel agent UK, I get holidays in Majorca or something meant for overseas visitors (shuttle from the airport, take in a West End show, etc).

jollygreenpea · 16/12/2022 14:15

Those barns look lovely thanks but hoping for more of a really luxury cottage with stunning views, countryside, really top end! Willing to pay but cannot see anything

Can you link to some that fit what you see as top end, obviously from some other places in the country so posters can get an idea of what you mean?.

Traditionally the North West is made up of industrial areas, there are very few areas of outstanding natural beauty apart from the Lakes.

Also housing stock is different, there wasn't the lovely honey coloured stone that much of the Cotswold is built from. Cobb wasn't a usual building material that picture postcard cottages are made from. Thatch isn't common either in this area, it's more red brick and slate.

Perhaps there were the type of cottages that you seem to be after but they were lost to the industrial revolution, and probably tiny run down farm houses type of buildings.

I know people are going to disagree and say such a place still exist, but they are pockets dotted around, villages here and there where any views have long since replaced with 'progress' sadly.

Not really sure what kind of a thing you're looking for? There appear to be lots when I do a quick search 😂

There's this in the peaks:

Have you tried looking at the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire. Beautiful countryside, walks, pubs etc.

Merlott · 16/12/2022 15:25

@SquirrelFan you want to search "holiday agency" or "luxury letting agency" not "travel agent".

I can't afford any of this but like to dream!!

Try the ads in Sunday Times travel section, and the luxury travel mags e.g. Conde Nast.

SquirrelFan · 16/12/2022 15:56

Thanks, @Merlott! Sounds like a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning!

I’d also add if your name relates to wharfedale, I’m a wharfedale exile too…and nothing ever compares to that 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Maybe I was spilt growing up 🤷🏼‍♀️

So I've bought a £500 voucher with luxurycottages.co.uk. (Not the dot com site as that's a different company and they aren't as nice).

Some of the suggestions are helpful thanks but not what I'd class as luxury, they're fairly standard holiday homes (and nothing wrong with that!). Some of the cottages for the above company are really lovely, nicely done, modern and have lots of lovely extras. That's the kind of thing I was looking for. There is one in cheshire Bluebell which is the one I think my parents will go for, but there are others and again some lovely ones in Shropshire which isn't too much further afield.
