Having to leave heating on due to boiler freezing

So now I’ve got to leave the boiler running 24 hrs a day because it keeps shutting down when the out pipe freezes 😩
Roll on summer !

Argh me too! But I found if I turn it down to the lowest temperature (about 30 degrees on my boiler) it 'only' costs about £6 a day - still a lot more than I'd normally pay, but this very cold snap is forecast to end over the weekend so hopefully it'll only be needed for 1-2 days.

My DM is elderly and has hers on 17c 24 hours a day (reckons she can cope with it being cold in day but not at night). As she's using it so much, she has the problem that her condensate pipe froze twice yesterday. It's well lagged. She was lucky her engineer came out both times within a hour of her calling (last call 8.30pm last night). Not the best thing to do, but he's cut through the pipe so pipe is dribbling in bucket under boiler.

According to TikTok the condensation pipes are now fitted internally to a waste pipe, so we are going to look at having that done next year.

Our condensation pipe has frozen and the boiler has stopped working, despite it being on permanently. Obviously chooses to do this the weekend we have guests! Sad

Mine froze yesterday and the plumber told me to pull the condensate pipe out of the boiler and put a bucket underneath to catch any water.

I’m leaving it like that until it defrosts then getting some pipe covers on the outside to hopefully stop them refreezing

Ours is running 24/7 currently because our flat flooded on Wednesday, courtesy of a burst pipe from the one above. I didn’t know the condensation pipes could freeze so will ask DH to check on this today! Absolute nightmare, but the alternative was to leave the place wet until the contractors can start drying it out next week.

According to TikTok it needs to be Armaflex lagging. Others hold water so just help it freeze.
If anyone knows for sure I’d be grateful.

I had an email from British Gas about this issue....

I had a text and email from Scottish Power so it must be a common problem.

You can use a hairdryer (indoors!) to blow hot air at the pipes below your boiler that go outside. Do it for about 5 minutes, maybe a bit more. Then hit the reset button (on mine, it’s a flame with a cross).
Always happens to me when it gets to -4C or colder. I used to be able to disconnect pipe to drip into bucket but can’t with new boiler. But hairdryer works, thank goodness!
