What are these companies and why are they taking my money?

So I found these transactions going out every month from my bank account. I have tried to cancel them through online banking, but the money is still going out. I have no idea what they are. I have Googled both companies but they ask for my credit card details, which I am not prepared to supply. Any ideas? Thanks.

No idea what they, some sort of subscription possibly.
If you have an online banking app check direct debits and standing orders and cancel them. I’m not sure if they could be attached to your card so if you don’t find them as DDs or SOs call your bank tomorrow.
Also check it’s not a monthly payment via PayPal, though it doesn’t look like it.

Go into your bank and ask them if they know who they are.
I got caught out with an online purchase, at the end of the ordering process a pop up message appeared giving me a 20% discount, apply at checkout. I did so, got the discount and thought nothing of it until my account was overdrawn. Checked my account and saw £4.00 a week was going from my account to a shopping discount scheme. By applying to the discount I’d unknowingly signed up for it. I couldn’t stop the payments, I found from a forum that loads of people had been caught out.
They’d used my bank details and phone number to set it up. I did eventually stop the payments with help from the bank.

@Fleurdaisy they don't appear in DDs and SOs, so it looks like they're attached to my card. Will the bank be able to block the payments, do you think?

Ring your bank or credit card company, they should be able to give you more detail. This is what I've done in the past when I haven't immediately recognised the name posted with the transaction, all was okay in my case, forgot I'd bought some stamps and the name on the transaction didn't have any obvious link to the post office.

DH inadvertently signed up to something when he was trying to pay at a car parking machine. I noticed an odd, albeit small, payment on our joint account and rang our bank - First Direct. FD are contactable by telephone 24/7 and are SO helpful. They put me through to their fraud department who blocked any further payments and explained what they thought had happened. Not exactly a scam but quite an underhand way of getting people to sign up to something unintentionally.

Looks like you may be in a subscription trap, where you have unwittingly become involved with a continuous payment authority on your credit card. Its a very shady activity - it can be something like a discount in a service or product or free trial but then the small print gives them the authority to keep deducting the money, even if you are no longer getting any benefit - or are aware that you are signed up.

You need to sort this out with your card issuer.

KateBalesCardi · 16/12/2022 00:11

If it's a recurring payment on your card you might find the bank can't/won't help because it must have been authorised by you at some point, even if inadvertently. This happened to me and I just reported my card as lost and got a new one with shiny new card number/CVV code so the recurring payment would no longer go through, sorted!

happinessischocolate · 16/12/2022 00:12

In my experience the quickest way to deal with it, is to block and cancel your card and order a new one. The recurring payment will then be stopped.

Phos · 16/12/2022 00:23

These sound like scams.

The websites have US phone numbers but UK addresses. There's little on there other than practically identical text about having found them on credit card statements and if you click on "reset password" or "cancel subscription" it asks for the first 6 and last 4 digits of your credit card!!

I would call your bank and ask if these payments can somehow be stopped and if not, cancel the card and get a new one.

Your bank is obliged to help but a lot of them don’t understand that, so you will have to be firm with the bank and escalate it as a complaint if they tell you to contact the company.

Both companies are small, single director companies with low value accounts (I looked them up at Companies House) that look like they are specifically set up for this purpose. Their websites quote some identical wording too, so clearly bought off the shelf.

that’s not remotely true. If you have unauthorised payments going out it can be reported as fraud and will be handled as such bt the bank. Ditto payments you don’t recognise.

the technicality is when you have (quite underhandly) authorised payments to leave your account, then the responsibility lies with you not protecting your money and checking your statements frequently and flagging issues you’ll want refunded. Banks aren’t gatekeepers to the way you use your cash.

all that said, op cancelling your card and requesting a new one will solve this quickest.

I am quoting the report from citizen’s advice that was linked above. See page 22 of the report.

“In 36 per cent of the cases shown above, the consumer’s request to cancel the CPA was refused, their bank took the wrong action, or further payments were taken anyway. The reasons given by banks for refusing to cancel CPAs would suggest that many front line staff are not fully aware of the obligations of banks and card providers under the Payment Services Regulations to remove authorisation for a series of payments upon request.18 We found that consumers were instead being told that:
● the bank was unable to cancel the CPA
● only the company could cancel the CPA
● the client had agreed a contract with the trader
The fact that the majority of consumers are unaware of their rights to cancel a CPA means that most do not challenge these reasons.
In 15 per cent of our survey cases banks or card providers told consumers to contact the company to cancel their CPA. This was a particular practice that the OFT warned against in 2013: “Customers should not be misled regarding their rights to cancel [CPAs]. In particular they should not be told they are required to contact the business before (or instead of) the payment service provider.”19
18 The Payment Services Regulations 2009 Part 55(4) (see p.5 in chapter 1 above for quotation) 19 Principles for use of Continuous Payment Authority - The Office of Fair Trading, January 2013 (available at webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk)

These look like what are called continuous payments attached to your credit or debit card.

Lemonlady22 · 16/12/2022 01:59

Report card lost, cancel it, get new one. That’s all you can do.

DH has reminded me the money was being charged to my mobile phone bill and not coming out of my bank account. I’ve got muddled up with another incident when my card was cloned, which caused the account to go into the overdraft. The bank sorted that as it was fraud.
Both incidents happened round about the same time.
I was correct about the discount code, it was really sneaky how they did it, .Click here for 20% discount’. They already had my mobile number as it was required for the online purchase..I’ve been asked for it other times as a contact number and thought nothing of it..they then started charging £4.00 a week to my phone bill. My bills are never high so it was shock to see a big increase in it.
The wording in their website, re cancelling or unsubscribing was similar to the wording in the link given by another poster. Basically they will take their sweet time in stopping the charges.
They didn't answer phone calls or emails, the end I changed my phone number and the payments stopped.
I’m very wary now with discount codes.
