The best skill you've ever learned

I was thinking about this today..... Have narrowed it down to:

  1. Learning to read
  2. Learning to drive

I'd love to learn something new, or have a new hobby. Would love to hear other people's thoughts!

There's not one overall life skill I can call out...instead I'll break it down into ages:

Junior - Reading, Writing and Swimming

Adolescence - Driving

Adulthood - Decorating

I was lucky enough to have my Dad teach me the last one, which is surprising after the experience we had whilst he was trying to teach me the second! Blush

Touch typing and driving are the things I use every day. Both I learnt aged 17. Changing a plug/tyre also but they have become less useful. Calculating percentages. I also learnt how to hang wallpaper and do tiling. How to make a proper roux sauce. And learning French has come in very handy.

Nightskyatnight · 15/12/2022 22:14

Touch typing here too. Most useful thing I learnt at school!

BrandyandGinger · 15/12/2022 22:17

I learned to touch type during lockdown and it's been so handy. It didn't even take very long to learn. Good Excel skills are also very useful.

Yez, touvh tyypimg. I
t's chafed my liofe...

declutteringmymind · 15/12/2022 22:19

Not being afraid to learn something new to get to be able to do what I want to do.

Never been wrong about someone yet. I've reserved judgement in a few occasions but when my gut instinct has been instantly for or against someone, I've always been right. Eventually.

maximist · 15/12/2022 22:20

Touch typing here too. I've no idea why it isn't a compulsory subject in schools, given the ubiquitousness of computers. I taught myself in the mid 80s on an ancient manual typewriter, it's been more useful than anything I learnt at school.

Reading the body language of other people.

Negotiating.
I thought being a Police Negotiator would be limited to those in crisis.
Nope, made me realise how valuable listening, I mean really listening is.
Made me a better leader, mum and partner too, best skill I’ve ever learnt.
A gift

Creative computer stuff. Websites, photoshop, drawing a logo, making a poster or leaflet or booklet. I do a lot of that sort of stuff for family and acquaintances, and also for myself. It would cost thousands if I had to pay someone.

talkingmorenonsense · 15/12/2022 22:30

Touch typing.

SkankingWombat · 15/12/2022 22:31

To be independent, self-reliant and confident in my abilities. I have recently learnt that this is very likely learned as a response to a traumatic childhood, which was obviously crap and unenviable, but it has been invaluable when life has dealt me some really crappy hands as an adult and gives me solace that I will always get through whatever is thrown at me.

After that it would be reading. There is little you can't learn/teach yourself if you can read and have the will.

Seeusernamehistory · 15/12/2022 22:35

Learning to say no and defend myself. It's something I'm also just learning but it's helping me a lot.

Agree with the majority - touch typing is a skill used daily

PauliesWalnuts · 15/12/2022 22:42

Touch typing.
Cooking from scratch when I was in primary school, like a previous poster.
Basic butchery and shit-hot fishmonger skillz (from a Saturday job) - has saved me thousands over the years as I buy fish from the market in bulk, sort it myself and freeze it. Also made my boyfriend decide I was a keeper when he saw me dress a couple of 🦞

PauliesWalnuts · 15/12/2022 22:43

Oh and riding a bike. Has taken me on ace holidays over the years because it’s the best way to see a country. And it saves me around £750 a year in commuting costs.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/12/2022 22:45

How to calmly and rationally handle confrontation. I have absolutely no fear of confrontation from anyone. If there's an issue, I don't waste time. I address it and resolve it.
