DS hyper on Calpol

Anyone have any experience of this?

DS has had a snotty cold all week but was keen to go to school. He had no temperature so gave him some Calpol and sent him in. Our TA reckons the Calpol has sent him hyper. We've used the sugar-free variety - which we've not tried before. DS has ASD - not sure if that's relevant or not. Anyone else had this issue with their kid. Not sure if it's a real thing or just my son being hyped up by all the Christmas activities going on at school...

My ASD teen has always been a nightmare with artificial sweeteners. It could totally be that. We still don't let him have diet drinks!

@Choccolatte that's helpful, thanks. Not something I've come across before but have binned the Calpol as a precaution....

Coming from Aus where colour free Panadol is a thing, found Calpol awful. The ingredients include E110 www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/260/smpc#gref, which includes hyperactivity as a side effect www.ivyroses.com/Define/E110 and has been described by Southampton University as a bad thing www.foodanddrinktechnology.com/news/488/southampton-six-safety-review/.

Ask your pharmacist to make you up a a colour free suspension. A bit of sugar is unlikely to be of any harm but do also be aware that artificial colours and benzoate preservatives may also cause similar problems.
