What temperature should I leave the thermostat on in an empty house?

We're going away over Christmas. I'm planning on leaving the heating on continuous while we're away, but what temperature should I set the thermostat to to try and avoid burst pipes? TIA.

Our heating automatically goes into frost protect mode when it is turned off. This means that if the temperature inside the house dropped below 8 degrees then the boiler would come on to try and avoid frozen pipes.

You could set it at that, although it seems slightly low to me. I'd probably set it for around 10 or 12 degrees if I had to choose.

I'd set it at 15

Our insurance for an empty house (for much longer than a holiday) stated 10C minimum. So, somewhere round there should keep the house over 8 - remember the temperature needs to drop BELOW the thermostat temperature, often by a degree or 2, before the boiler fires up again.

I'd probably go with 14. Our house very rarely gets to that point and of it does it's absolutely freezing outside

saraclara · 15/12/2022 15:57

There's no need to have it on continuous. Have it on about 15 degrees during the day, and off at night. Then at least your house won't be horribly cold to come home to.

We have recently come back from holiday, I left ours on at 15, it felt reasonably OK when we arrived home, we did turn it up and it wasn't long before the house had warmed up.
As an aside, I did turn off all unnecessary electrical things, the oven, microwave and digital clocks, in an effort to save electricity.

This is where I love that I had Hive fitted when I had a new boiler. I can switch the heating on from my phone before I set off home, and have a nice toasty home to return to!

Just don't have your internet contract switch to another provider while you are away. 🥶

I'm leaving mine at 15, plus the electric blanket for the cats.
My friend will be in daily anyway.

The frost protection setting on ours kicks in at 7 degrees if that helps.

In rooms we don’t use I leave on frost setting overnight and 15 degrees 9am-6pm so it doesn’t get ‘damp’

Justmuddlingalong · 15/12/2022 16:31

Our frost protection is set to 10 atm, but I think that seems too low. I think I'll set it to 15 and let it click on and off as required. Thanks for everyone's advice.

Plumber said 14-15 a couple of times a day for an hour. One of these times should be at the coldest time of the day, which is the early hours. Very important to leave the loft hatch open. A few years ago we went away in January and didn’t leave the heating on because it was mild. It turned cold and we came back to a burst mains pipe in the loft. The pipe was lagged.
