Missing last couple days of school due to not being 100% after bug

Dd had a nasty stomach bug sun/mon/tue . The 48 hours are now over since the last incident of sickness but she’s wiped out. It’s freezing here and will be again tomorrow. She stayed asleep when her alarm went off so I’m just leaving her as I think she needs the rest ?
Im not sure what to say to school though I don’t think feeling rundown after a bug is going to be an authorised absence ? Not sure what to do. It’s a 25 min walk to school as well each way if that is relevant and she is so weak from being unwell

My twins are the same. Not puking but no appetite and utterly shattered. I've rung in and said they're still sick. End of.

willingtolearn · 15/12/2022 09:12

'X is still unwell and will not be at school today'

That's all that is needed.

Recuperation after the acute phase of an illness is important, but rarely available these days.

Fundays12 · 15/12/2022 09:12

Just keep her off. My 6 year old is the same and at home today. She isn't well enough to be in school so shouldn't be in my view.

At this time of the year it’s probably better to let them get really better. I’m normally one of those “you’ll feel better when you’re distracted by your friends!” parents but DS(6) is off today with a cold because he’s just so exhausted and run down, I’ve decided he really needs a duvet and telly day to shake it off (he’s had it off and on for two weeks). It’s freezing and everyone is exhausted. Let them rest.

Notjusta · 15/12/2022 09:14

They are still ill, just tell school that. It's fine. Also they are doing bugger all for the next day and a half anyway. No one will mind.

At our school we have to specify exactly the nature of illness so can’t just say ‘unwell’ so I’d have to say she was sick again I think as I’d told them yest the 48 hours wasn’t up till today I may just say she was actually sick again as otherwise they won’t be happy. Attendance is at 92% because she’s been unwell a lot since September

My son is the same, hasn't been sick for over 48 hours now but he is exhausted still as he has barely eaten for days so I'm keeping him off for the rest of the week to recover fully

Yes it’s the cold as well it’s particularly low temperatures where we are today and she hasn’t really eaten much at all so is pale and was a bit shaky yesterday a walk in the cold I think would be a very bad idea

Post viral fatigue should cover it. Dd is the same and she's not going in

Nearlychristmas123 · 15/12/2022 09:17

yeah just say she has been sick again. it’s a couple of days. My DC was off the other day, he only had a mild cough but asked could he stay in his pjs and watch films because he was so tired. We all need a duvet day sometimes

Exactly - he has breakfast and afterschool club as well and somedays I just think, I'd absolutely hate to be made to go into the office feeling like this, so it's not fair to make them go.

@Greendiamonds

I would push back about having to specify illness. It is your role as a parent to decide on whether your child is well enough to attend school. You do not have to justify it and school does not have the medical knowledge or experience to decide for you.

Heartstopper · 15/12/2022 09:28

Similar sounding bug has just swept through our family. Dh and I were a day later than your dd by the sounds of it. We were tentatively trying to eat yesterday. I still stayed in bed but dh got up and spent the day on the sofa. Today I am going to try to get up and dh is going to attend some meetings online but he is prevaricating whether he feels strong enough to nip in the car to the supermarket for such much needed essentials. There is no way either of us would be strong enough to walk 25 mins or spend a day outside the home, either today or tomorrow.

Let your poor dd recover. You simply tell the school she is unwell. With a stomach bug if they press you further.

I would say she had puked within the 48 hours. If proved wrong, I'd play the " oh silly me maths was never my strong point" this attendance obsession is why many of the mums ( and I mean the non working ones, I totally understand whose who have non sympathetic bosses, important jobs etc) at my dcs school feel validated in sending in kids who are contagiously poorly. It grinds my gears.

marrymeadam · 15/12/2022 16:57

If a child isn't capable of eating normally/spending all day awake/getting up as normal then they are not ready to be back at school
