Would you let your DC queue overnight in freezing temperatures to see their idol?

This is an interesting article from the BBC. Louis Tomlinson, ex-One Direction, was playing a small venue this week. The record store who had arranged the gig told ticket holders that if they turned up overnight their tickets would not be valid to deter people from queuing overnight in freezing temperatures. On the day of the gig, they gave people in the queue wristbands. Those who had queued overnight would be the last in to the show. Those who had joined the queue at the time they said the queue would open would be let in first. So, fans who has got their place early and camped in the cold would be at the back of the queue, just as the event organisers had warned. The alternative was to cancel the gig entirely. I'm just wondering what people think of this? It seems a bit mean for those who queued early - but they were told their tickets would be invalid.

In answer to your question, no I wouldn’t.
Their system sounds like they’ve tried everything else.

They people camping were moved on from outside the venue and they just moved their tents out of site behind a shop opposite. It's dangerous and bonkers and as a mum whose child attended this concert two nights in a row (yes she is bonkers)issuing wrist bands was the safest and fairest way to ensure no one was getting dangerously cold.

No I wouldn’t, no one is worth queuing up to see in weather like this, not a single soul. A young homeless woman died from the cold in Dublin this week

Sounds like they were trying to as responsible as possible and deter people from putting their health at risk.

Oliol · 15/12/2022 01:44

Sorry, I didn't answer the question - no, no chance.

Thethingswedoforlove · 15/12/2022 02:03

people already had tickets, let’s be clear! This was just about where to be standing. My dd went to this concert and arrived 15th before the door opened (admittedly that was because of the train strike and a physical inability to get there earlier) and she had a great time. It just wasn’t necessary to get there so early. The time they said was already 8am when doors opened at 7.30pm! Already enough time in the freezing conditions. But cancelling for those who did nothing wrong would have been unforgivable. And definitely I would never let my child queue overnight in freezing conditions just for a concert.

I know the owner of Banquet Records and his reasoning was it was freezing, literally.
Ultimately they we're trying to keep people safe, along with police advice.
There were posts on FB re homeless people camping in the freezing weather when in fact it was young girl fans.
I fully support his stance on this.

Whatifthegrassisblue · 15/12/2022 04:57

Seems quite commendable actually thatbthey didnt want people to queue in the freezing cold. The people who did were warned, so tbh it makes them pretty stupid

Kapalika · 15/12/2022 05:02

In answer to your question, no I wouldn't let my child do this.

RambamThankyouMam · 15/12/2022 06:55

No.

And I discourage my children from participating in obsessive fandoms. They're for weak-willed crowd-followers with no imagination.

Bumpsadaisie · 15/12/2022 06:57

No. It was -11 at 11pm where I live in the northwest last night. Not good to be in it any length of time.

Cwcwbird · 15/12/2022 06:59

No way. And good for the organisers for looking out for the safety of the fans.

I wouldn't let my child queue in this weather.

(As an aside, that story about the young homeless woman dying has not been verified and was the post was removed from the original site. I really hope it was not true. I remember a homeless man dying in a doorway outside Leinster House a few years ago. Very sad)

TheFairyCaravan · 15/12/2022 07:16

No I wouldn’t.

It sounds like the organisers were looking out for the fans. Good for them fot at least trying to deter kids from camping in these temperatures.

tabulahrasa · 15/12/2022 07:25

No, but... most of his fans aren’t children, doubt there was parents “letting” them or stopping them doing it tbh.

KeepingTheWormsQuiet · 15/12/2022 10:12

I was at the Monday gig with my 15 year old daughter. We arrived 15 minutes before doors open time, but they'd already opened. The street outside was strewn with rubbish/sleeping bags and the plastic blankets the council gave out. Those that camped had got in first and we had no chance of getting near the stage, but got an OK view in the end.
I think what Banquet Records did the next day was great. So many queueing in the cold is a pain for the venue, the police and the council. My daughter would have been pretty pissed off if the venue had to cancel the gig due to the overnight queuers.
tabulahrasa is right most of the audience were young adult women and very few were younger teens with parents. Louis is 30 and OD split up quite a few years ago so his fans aren't all young teenagers anymore.

Georgeskitchen · 15/12/2022 11:18

Well they were warned and if they ignored the warning its on their own head.
P.S Who is Louis Tomlinson?😉
