Diabetic chocolate?

My uncle has diabetes. I was going to get him a chocolate hamper for Christmas but now that he's got diabetes, I can't. I was going to get him a diabetic chocolate selection instead, but Diabetes.co.uk says that things shouldn't be called diabetic foods, and they may just be as bad.

Obviously I don't want to get him anything that he can't eat or will risk his health. Does anyone who has any experience of diabetes know if I'm best not touching 'diabetic' chocolate either? I

Honestly I wouldn’t bother- it’s full of laxative like sweeteners.
take it from a. Type one diabetic/ buy him the mastering diabetes book.
it is full of research, recipes and he will get more out of it than you think

get it for him if you want to give him a dose of the shits. it’s also just as carby (or more) than normal chocolate and it’s the carbs that matter to diabetics, not sugar

My diabetes service reckon a couple of squares of ordinary 89% dark chocolate are fine.
They said to steer clear of "diabetic" stuff and "no added sugar" sweets/biscuits etc

The diabetic chocolate also has a laxative effect if you eat "too much" (which really isn't fun) - and "too much" isn't really a lot.

Last time I had some I had awful stomach ache for the rest of the day.

Diabetics need to watch carbohydrate content and a lot of these so called diabetic foods tend to replace sugar with other stuff that still has carbs but without the nice taste and the bonus of having a laxative affect! I.e. avoid them.

I m a diabetic and eat chocolate but just tend to eat less of it but all diabetics are different. I find chocolate one of the better treat foods because the fat content means it doesn't spike me.

I'm a type 1 (so can match my insulin to what I'm eating) but a type 2 may not eat chocolate. But I don't know any diabetics that eat diabetic chocolate, so based on my experience I would not recommend it as a present.

I bought a type 2 diabetic some diabetic chocolates and they got quite angry with me and told me to buy normal chocolates next time and “not that rubbish”.

I'd probably steer clear of any food items for a diabetic. It's so loaded and complication esp if diagnosed he may just feel a bit overwhelmed.

Maybe a nice hamper full of activities to take his mind off of things like puzzle magazines or a good book. Some stuff related to his favourite football team. Lii
