Experience of being a PT salaried partner in high st law firm?

I was made redundant at the start of the pandemic, then quickly found out I was pregnant with DC1 so I have been out of the workforce for a couple of years now.

I'm a private client/contested probate solicitor of 12 years PQE. My last firm didn't have any rank structure but I would say I was equivalent of a senior associate.

I'm wanting to get back to work and a recruiter has contacted me about a salaried partner role. They know I'm looking for part time.

Partnership hasn't ever really been on my agenda, but it would really help the family financially.

I'm just worried about the juggle and the additional responsibilities. Can anyone share their experiences of being a salaried partner with young kids? Thanks!

Difficult to advise without more information?

Salaried partner roles vary according the set up. Are they expecting you to bring a book?

How much exposure did you get to the more business end at your previous firm? I.e. how much of a step up do you think it will be in practice?

I would say you have zero chance of actually working part time. I haven’t worked at a high street firm but in the boutique, medium and large firms I worked at female partners routinely were working well over their hours. It is part time in name only. Anecdotally I would expect more pressure on a partner in a high street firm as there are fewer people there to begin with. How old are your children? Is the salary worth it? Is the title the hook to get you in the door?

Private client salaried partner here - two young kids and just returned to work after 6 month Mat leave. It’s tough juggling it all but what job isn’t with a family . I guess it depends a lot on the culture of the firm and how realistic they are re targets and how many others in the team you’d be expected to manage.

Part time law firm partnership tends to mean full time hours for part time pay in my experience.

I was offered partnership at a different firm when I was on Mat leave. I had been planning to go back 4 days a week to my old firm but thought I needed to be full time to make a go of it. I won't lie - it was really bloody tough but it would have been churlish not to take the promotion on offer. Each firm will be different though - I have now been a partner at two City firms and they were different very places.
