Anyone use two separate duvets on the one bed?

DH runs v hot, me cold. We normally use our woollen baavet duvet but it's only about 10tog and it's also not quite big enough so I have to wake up to turn over to tuck back under IYGWIM?

We tried a 13.5 lovely soft, fluffy duvet last night and I slept like a baby- DH woke up and had to towel down and sleep under a dressing gown such was his night sweats. I think it's as much the fluffiness which means it forms right to your body as the tog.

So, we need two separate duvets - I want a light and fluffy one (down maybe) and he needs a synthetic flat one. This is why a his and hers duvet won't work, as they are both the same type. I do sometimes have blankets too but as the duvet isn't big enough they still don't help.

Anyone use two separate duvets on the one bed? Is it as unromantic as DH fears? Is it best to have two doubles rather than singles? Annoyingly we have no double bedding so will have to go and buy some covers too.

We use two singles, a one tog for menopausal me and a 7 tog for my DH.
It works fine for us , just bring your duvet with you if you want a cuddle!

A one tog!! Goodness me, I'm menopausal too and do have my moments but it's actually making me colder. Glad it works for you - what size is your bed if you don't mind me asking? Not sure whether two singles would be enough on our bed - might borrow the kids one night and try it!

When I lived in Germany in the 1980's all of the double beds were two singles attached and they always had separate duvets for each side.
They didn't understand shared duvets AT ALL.

There's nothing 'romantic' about one person being freezing while the other is sweaty, and probably both lacking sleep. I'd probably go for doubles, then if you want to snuggle close under one you have that option.

Bestcatmum · 14/12/2022 13:07

Buy a pair of coverless duvets from night owl, you can add layers and they go straight into the machine and air dry within one hour on the bannister so no duvet covers needed. I love mine. I just add a blanket if its really cold.

Two singles on a double bed works perfectly. Can have different togs, no stealing of the duvet by one person or the other, can bundle yourself up if you like or they overlap slightly meaning you can still snuggle.

It's normal in Germany, no idea why. Stayed in 4 different places this summer, all had a double bed but two duvets.

Also usual everywhere we've stayed in the Netherlands.

I would prefer it, husband insists on double (well, king-sized).

We have reclinable attached twins for reading and it's getting irritating when one of us is up in the air and the other wants to sleep so am just doing the same.

Another vote for two duvets here. We actually have three - two for the wife and one for me.

I'm only slightly overstating it when I say that it saved our marriage ;)

Pinkybike · 14/12/2022 13:12

Our bed is two large singles zipped together so at least king size.
I’m always hot and having my own duvet that I can throw on & off makes life a lot better for both of us
Two doubles would be too much for us I think.

EmmaC78 · 14/12/2022 13:13

You can buy a duvet that is two different togs. Can't remember who makes ot but I saw one a few months ago.

RedRosie · 14/12/2022 13:14

We have two double duvets on a king sized bed.

It's the secret to a happy marriage.

DistrictCommissioner · 14/12/2022 13:16

We have two single duvets on a queen bed.

yepp, and mostly it's a bedframe with separate mattresses to. Can't consider sleeping any other way, it's brilliant.

Pineapplebread · 14/12/2022 13:17

Yes, it is a marriage saver 😂 no more waking up resentful of the quilt being stolen in the night. We have two, I have a huge thick king-size on and i sleep with it in half, and I wedge myself in it, so quilt below me quilt on top

Porkydorky · 14/12/2022 13:21

Absolutely! We have a super king bed with two single duvets. We also have a pretty bedspread to go over both of them when we make the bed, just for the aesthetics. It’s brilliant, I love it and get a bit annoyed if we stay in a hotel and I have to share a duvet with DH 😁

DPotter · 14/12/2022 13:24

We use 2 and have for several years. Completely transformed our sleep, both of us sleep so much better. Dp likes a thin duvet all year around and I swap from a 7 to a 13.5 for winter. Yes the bed doesn't look as tidy, but it's easier to change a single duvet cover than a double so I'd say that's an advantage too.

Ideally I'd like a midi sized duvet cover so I could really cocoon myself but can't find one. We have a king sized bed

LitralViolins · 14/12/2022 13:25

We have a super-king bed, and we each have our own double duvet. In winter we then have a super-king duvet over the top of both for extra cosiness.

It's a gamechanger. No more exasperated, passive-aggressive duvet-tugging at 3am, and you can still snuggle, I promise Grin

LitralViolins · 14/12/2022 13:27

Although, yes, it does make it harder when you go on holiday and have to make do with one duvet! We're off to the in-laws' for Christmas and will be in a standard double with one duvet between us. I'm getting ready for a week of no sleep...

germany is still like that, was in a hotel a few weeks back in berlin and the double bed had 2 seperate duvets

DPotter · 14/12/2022 13:29

@LitralViolins - take a duvet with you !!

HermioneWeasley · 14/12/2022 13:29

We have a king sized bed with two single duvets. It’s bliss

MolesOnPoles · 14/12/2022 13:33

It’s great. Best is you ‘size up’, so two queen duvets on a kingsise, rather than two singles. That way they can overlap and there’s no cold patch in the middle to kill romance.

GloomyDarkness · 14/12/2022 13:33

We've always had singles each - from early days of relationship - as we each thought the other hogged the duvet.

Still together 25 year later married now with three kids - so can't have entirely killed the romance.
