Hypothyroidism and Gut issues

I'm hoping to hear from others with similar issues to try and calm my nerves as I suffer from a bit of health anxiety.

I've had an under-active thyroid for 11 years. I was on 50mcg for most of that time up until about 2 years ago. I started to experience awful stomach and gut problems (feels like my stomach won't digest food properly). I was also having a lot of bowel issues and passing some blood. Doctor did exam and reassured me all okay. Did blood test, and told me I was under - put me on 75mcg. All seemed fine - stomach issues subsided.

I've recently come back from abroad where the climate was very hot and humid. Since I've been back, my issues have returned with a vengeance. I think I'm under again as I'm extremely tired, have sleep issues, feel very hot and cold, stomach issues (again), weight issues, dry skin etc.

I'm due to get bloods done again next week, but does anyone suffer from similar issues? And do you find the cold weather (winter) affects your thyroid more? Always seems to make things so much worse for me, although think I have a bit of S.A.D too.

Hey, as a long term sufferer I wanted to give you a bit of advice, I was born without a thyroid, it took them 24 years to get my levels right. The medication still only keeps some of the symptoms at bay. Everyday is a lucky dip of which one will rear it’s head. I feel a lot better than I have in previous years and as far as I know levels were all good. I take 175mcg and have done since 2016, from 2012 when I was pregnant with my daughter I was on 200 for 4 years when suddenly I started feeling rough. I have Ibs which thankfully isn’t because of the thyroid, but because I had gastritis back in 2017 and got Ibs for my troubles. They are all connected though. If you feel rough, tell your doctor, they may treat you for diabetes, that’s a regular thing when ever I say I feel rough. Gut issues are par for the course with thyroid issues, you just gotta learn to live with it, try not to let it bring you down.

Undermedication gives me (1) IBS- agonising upper tract wind (2) constipation (3) trapped wind. I need my TSH to be low, 0.3-0.5. It also took me years to get the correct dose.

I'm new on the journey only 6 months into meds but was started on 50mcg which was way under for me and made me feel 100 times WORSE than before I knew about my underactive thyroid.
At 75mcg daily I'm much better and don't have constipation at the moment. It was awful at the start though so I feel for you.

I've noticed a big difference in how I feel by going gluten free and sticking to it.
