Call back after blood test

Hi everyone,

My partner has been feeling out of breath, dizzy, chest pains etc especially when doing activities, so was sent for a blood test yesterday with an ecg coming up this week.

The Dr phoned today asking for us to call to discuss the blood test results but my partner was in work so missed the call. We phoned back but the Dr had finished for the day & they said a phone call is booked in for this Friday.

We’re worrying now thinking why have they contacted us so quick? The very next day. Something has to be abnormal?

Any advice/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

It will be something out of range, or something needing to be retested/additional tests needed.
If it was something really urgent they would have passed it on to the duty dr to phone him later, they wouldn’t have just booked a chat for 3 days time and then gone home. Try not to worry.
Do you know what bloods were tested?

Thanks for your quick response!

It was just because they phoned so quickly, the very next day after the blood test was done.

This is what was tested.

Thanks again.

It could be anything. Any abnormality or out-of-range result will result in a call. That’s a comprehensive blood test. It could just be the FBC has shown low haemoglobin and they want him to have iron. Or his sugars could be high and they want to retest or focus specifically on the at with another test.
Try not to assume the worst and wait to hear. They’ve tested for a lot so focus on the positive that they’ve likely found what’s at the root of his symptoms, and they may be able to treat that.

I agree with @KillerRobotCompetition , if it was really urgent, you would have got a call requesting action immediately, not waiting for a chat at the end of the week. It happened to me - I had a blood test first thing one day and got a call at 6.30pm that night asking me to go to A&E immediately. Turned out the blood test had shown I was dangerously anaemic and had glandular fever and they wanted to assess me and give me an iron infusion if required.

I was just wondering if anaemia screen was included (it is)because that can cause many of the symptoms your DH is suffering but it sounds like the GP is being thorough & he is having an ECG too.
Hopefully it is just something like that and your DH will soon be feeling much better.

So sorry to hear that

From past experience for me
Letter - low vitamin D (it was really low)
Phone call to make appointment - anaemia
Phone call out of hours same day as bloods, told to go straight to hospital - virtually no white blood cells

If it's urgent urgent, you know! My dad had the GP and an ambulance turn up after bloods once, he was saying he felt fine and they were bundling him into the ambulance with sirens on (the idiot ignored bleeding and needed two blood transfusions)

Agree you'd know if it was something urgent

i've seen it on the telly, so it must be true, in an episode of ambulance. A bloke had some dodgy bloods, GP couldn’t get hold of him, so they sent ambulance and were ready to force entry with the police

I have regular blood tests, most recent one I had a call back to go to surgery. Doc said very low iron, I said oh iron tablets then? Oh no hospital trip, all night in A&E and 2 bags of blood and 1 of iron. I had the same symptoms so my guess would be anaemia.
