Is there much point in a Christmas tree or any decorations?

We have a 4 year old with ADHD and autism who is extremely sensory. He touches everything! And can take things apart too. We also have a 17 month old who is into everything!

Is there any point having a Christmas tree or decorations? I think of a way round it apart from having decorations hanging on the ceiling.

Just a bit sad because I like the idea of putting their presents under the tree on Christmas eve.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Can you put a small tree on a table that is out of reach? That's what I did when my children were young.

And surely lots of decorations can be put high up enough not to be accessible?

Our dining table is in the lounge and that's the only table we have. The 17 month old has also just learnt how to climb on the table

We had a hanging half tree. That might work.

Or a small one that they can reach, trash and redecorate regularly until they get bored.
I had a cloth one that hung on a door with Velcro ornaments to put on.

Other decorations- paper chains, door hanging wreaths (I have something hanging on both sides of every door, either a wreath or an advent calendar. I'll look for some links).

There are ways and means. I'll see what I can find.

If you can’t put it on table, and can’t face the battles / destruction, then make a 2-D triangle shape hung on the wall? EG you get 3 long twigs, (long, middle sized, short), attach them together in a triangle ladder shape. Hang them from high on the wall with twine, so they make a Christmas tree triangle shape. Make sure lowest branch is out of reach. Sling plenty of lights around them and thread the baubles on.

I was going to suggest one of those parasol type trees with a long, thin trunk but thinking about it, at four he'd probably be able to reach the lower branches anyway. What about a small one that you can attach to your wall high up?

Here we go...

Drat. Photos won't come up. Also, things on bookshelves- Christmas teddies. Christmas cushions. Tablecloths, tea towels...

Think fabric. Hard to trash!

Non breakable decorations, so it's not the end of the world if they get touched, pulled off or thrown. We have lots of felt, wooden, paper etc. decorations and no chocolate or edibles on the tree!

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 13/12/2022 17:17

I can remember putting our tree on top of a coffee table and strapping the legs onto it so it couldn't (easily) fall!
Maybe that should have set alarm bells ringing (ds has adhd) but it didn't at the time Smile

Have a real one with lights outside your living room window? And a few inside decorations on the mantle piece or furniture in the living room. Could you have a small indoor tree that you just put up for Xmas morning to leave presents under?

MsChatterbox · 13/12/2022 17:34

Yes have a tree! With decorations that don't break easily and let go of the tree looking perfect. Do things like hanging tinsel over picture frames for some higher up decorations.
