Travelling to London this week, would you?

Obviously I know people who live and work in/around London don’t have a choice but if you did have a choice would you be travelling to London this week with the weather and the rail strikes?
My husband and I are booked to go to London from York on Thursday, staying 3 nights. I’ve had an email this morning saying our train has been cancelled but there are alternative replacement journeys available. It’s just got me thinking suddenly if this week is a good time to go. We are going for shopping/sightseeing and I’ve emailed our air bnb hosts and they’ve said they’re happy for us to move the trip if we want.
We were thinking we might drive instead (there is parking available) but not sure how bad the travel is around London once we actually get there?
Or is it fine? Any advice appreciated!

The tubes and buses aren't on strike, so assuming you aren't staying somewhere in London where you need an actual train to get in I would come.

I'm also supposed to be going to London on Thursday (driving) for an event and staying overnight so I'm following this thread for opinions 👀

tube and buses are on so should be fine. Depending on where the Airbnb is, most of central London is walkable anyway.

I was in London last week. Less busy than preCovid. If you're confident drivers and suss out the charges it's probably ok to do that instead of the train. Travelling around London - strikes will presumably affect that too, buses will be busier but can you walk?
I'd say it will be less convenient but depending on your plans, still doable if you plan ahead.

Oh great that’s what I want to hear! There also seems to be a lot of scaremongering with the weather and travel ‘grinding to a halt’ and suddenly our pre Christmas break seems a bit stressful!
We are staying near Burgess Park?

If you drive in, check whether you're driving into the ULEZ and whether you have to pay it. You don't want to miss that and end up with a fine. tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/

Jazamataz · 13/12/2022 13:26

Generally you’ll be able to get around ok, it’s so easy to walk to places if trouble with the tubes if you’re staying central. However, as a pre warning, it is manic right now. The shops around central are absolutely insane to the point of being unable to move.

LeafHunter · 13/12/2022 13:26

I’d definitely still be going. Not sure if I’ve missed how bad it’s being made to sound in some places but has been absolutely fine IME.

CointreauVersial · 13/12/2022 13:28

If you drive in, remember that everyone else is doing so too. The roads are definitely busier.

But once you're in you should have no problems getting about.

wobytide · 13/12/2022 13:32

I'd check the TFL website as depending on what you are doing tubes are affected and some bus services are on strike contrary to what others have said. But it's certainly not as widespread, but just depends on what you planned

skippy67 · 13/12/2022 13:33

Buses and tubes are still running here. No problem getting out and about.

BuyorRent · 13/12/2022 13:36

Nothing set in stone, just a bit of Christmas shopping and sightseeing. That’s why I suddenly wondered if it wouldn’t just be best to postpone it when everything has settled a bit. Sound like I might have been worrying for nothing though. Just annoying our train is cancelled!

If you're Burgess Park do some journey planner checks to make sure you can get places. There are some buses on strike in South London on Fri/Sat. I didn't think about those because it's noy services in my area and may not affect you either You can see what's affected here: tfl.gov.uk/campaign/strikes

kirinm · 13/12/2022 14:51

You'll be fine. If you're near Burgess Park you have lots of bus choices as well as the overground at Peckham / Queens Road Peckham.

kirinm · 13/12/2022 14:52

I think the bus strikes are more south west rather than south east London so probably won't impact you if you're over in SE15.

Peckhampalace · 13/12/2022 15:35

I dont live far from Burgess Park. I would come anyway, get an alternative train (driving is fine if you know where you are going but I never drive in central London) and between buses and tube you should be fine.
Have a good look at route planners (citymapper is my favourite) as walking is often not as long as you think.
