Taking baby on plane in two weeks

We're flying from Edinburgh to Toulouse with our combi feed baby who is due to be four months corrected (over five actual.) It's going to be awful isn't it? He has bad reflux too.

I found it pretty easy at that stage. I did however walk most of the way to Gibraltar. Be prepared, take what you need, feed him when taking off and landing…. And good luck.

Anewhoo · 13/12/2022 12:38

Nope! Make the most of it while you can! Four months is the best age for flying, we’ve just done it with an 18m old and it was a pain having to try and keep them from trying to touch the people in front! We flew at 3,4 and 6m and was really easy, especially for a short distance like that. Have a great trip!

Take double of everything you need for the plane. We once got delayed on the runway for four hours before take off. You will be fine. The air hostess said a bit of apple juice in the bottle for take off and landing does the trick.

Dd 5 months was more than fine! Fed her on take off.
The journey back however.... Looked down as I fastened the infant strap round her... Noticed a few spots. By take off she was covered..
(Mil later updated us dc at home had chicken pox!)

I covered dd in a blanket when the crew came round... Too late to fess up anyway!

Oh wow no! That’s such a short flight and baby not on the move yet. Plus sounds like you can just whack the baby on the boob if necessary. Took 4 month formula fed baby to Greece in the summer, was fine except busy green airport, could barely move. But only mildly stressful.

MassiveSalad22 · 13/12/2022 12:45

*greek!

Thanks all, I like the advice to take double what we need in case we get trapped.

I will put him to the breast but if really hungry he'll cry for bottle, which we'll take too. Are they allowed apple juice? He's never had anything except breast milk and formula

I hope the folks in front don't hate us

Why will it be awful? I took DS on a short flight at the same age and it was fine. Take him in a sling, feed him, take lots of muslins and nappies/wipes.

gogohmm · 13/12/2022 12:58

It's fine at that age, breastfeeding is your best bet at take off, helps with the ears, same at landing

but they wouldn’t be hating you, they’d be hating that they weren’t getting a quiet flight. And if they feel that way then you can’t change it. Unless you’re purposefully making DC vomit on their heads or asking them to breast feed the baby I think how they feel is out of your control!

When you’re at the gate, chat to other parents so you know who do ask something from if baby throws up over everything etc. My friend flew with her ten week old who promptly vomited on my friend as soon as they landed. She was flying alone and couldn’t change herself and look after the baby but the people she’d met held her stuff whilst she changed herself and DD. Other parents with young babies get it!

minipie · 13/12/2022 13:00

Don’t do apple juice but do bring formula and bottle. And stuff to chew on. A pillow so you can hold them on your lap more easily. A large scarf to wrap them in and make it dark if they want to sleep. A sling to carry them up and down the aisle. Change of clothes for all of you in case of puking/poo explosion. Probably 2 changes for DC. 100 muslins.

If people hate you they are the problem. It’s not a long haul flight, no one will be trying to sleep. They can put ear plugs in.

In fact - maybe bring some foam earplugs to hand round!

BabyFour2023 · 13/12/2022 13:01

Why do you think it’ll be awful? Our children have all flown from a few weeks old, absolutely fine. Better to get them used to it as young as possible in my opinion.

Doveyouknow · 13/12/2022 13:13

It's a great age to fly with kids. It gets a lot harder once they are a toddler on the move or a potty training pre schooler who inevitably needs the toilet as soon as the seatbelt sign goes on. Just feed them on landing and take off (bottle or bf, it doesn't matter) to avoid their ears getting sore. Also make sure you all have a change of clothes and plenty of wipes / nappies.

Lcb123 · 13/12/2022 13:17

I don’t see why it will be awful-just be prepared as others said. It’s only a 1-1.5 hour flight surely. I travel a lot, and never mind babies on flights. I’ve had much worse (people playing videos with no head phones for example!)
