"No current comms received from X regarding any Product recalls affecting X customers"

or

"No current comms received from X regarding any Product recalls effecting X customers"

(not sure why product is capitalised either and ignore the lack of full stops etc.!)

I'm sure it's Affecting but had it corrected and sent back to me and I can't bear a document with my name on having an error!

TIA!

It's affecting

Blenheimprincess · 13/12/2022 11:28

I am 100% sure on this!

MisgenderedSwan · 13/12/2022 11:28

Definitely affecting :-)

NatalieIsFreezing · 13/12/2022 11:28

Affecting is the verb you want. To 'effect' as a verb is to facilitate, e.g. to effect change.

LordEmsworth · 13/12/2022 11:28

Definitely it's affecting.

Unless you mean the recall is causing customers to come into being, which I very much doubt is the case.

Catnipples · 13/12/2022 11:29

You were right, it's affecting. And no capital P like you said :)

ChristmasTunesAlready · 13/12/2022 11:29

Yep, definitely affecting.

Affect is the verb, effect is the noun.

BurbageBrook · 13/12/2022 11:29

I teach English at university level. You’re right — it’s ‘affecting’.

Yep, definitely affecting.

Affect is the verb, effect is the noun.

They are both verbs and nouns.

TerraNostra · 13/12/2022 11:30

Who corrected it?

Whoever they were, you need to ask the company to effect some training for him/her!

Blenheimprincess · 13/12/2022 11:31

Effect is the result of something happening, e.g. the effect of my not going to work was...

Affect is used as follows: I was affected by the tube strikes as I wasn't able to get to work

The technical explanation is here:

"Product" may be capitalised if it is a defined term earlier in the document.

For example
"In this report we consider the implications of the defect discovered in plastic widget serial number 432816 (" the Product").

The Product first went on sale on 10 November....

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 13/12/2022 11:39

@TerraNostra it's come back from the person who sent it to me - I changed it and they've changed it back. This is for a very formal, FCA reportable internal forum of which I have just taken over as secretary so I want to get it right!

"Product" is a tricky one tbh, - the department is Product and Propositions, of which we deal with several Products. This is a title though and is referring to many products and sellers - like an Amazon type platform.

Do you feel able to tell the person who changed it that you are confident you are correct?

It's impossible to tell about the capital P without seeing the full document (not suggesting you post it) most likely it's wrong though! As a lawyer I do tend to be quite strict about not sprinkling random capitals because they do make us think it must be a defined term and send us off looking for the definition earlier in the document. So you either need to define it or lose the capital letter.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 13/12/2022 11:56

Yes I am confident enough to correct them. I might use someone's sentence from this very thread Wink.

The P is a little more contentious I agree - it is about slide 17 of a 40-odd deck. I have time blocked out tomorrow to read through and will take it in then and reassess I think.
