Any crochet or knitting people out there? Can you advise me about yarn bowls?

I'd like to get my neice a yarn bowl. Some reviews say they're too light or small. Anyone have one they recommend or have any tips?

Sorry wasn't sure which place to put this in

I knit. I honestly wouldn't get her one, they're completely useless. They look like something someone invented for Etsy rather than anything anyone would use. Big balls of yarn wouldn't fit, you still have to store needles and pattern elsewhere. I would hate to be given one, it's just a waste.

A brilliant present would be a gift voucher for her local yarn store so she can choose some beautiful yarn to knit with.

Agree gift voucher would be the most thoughtful then she can choose something to her tastes. And if there is a local store you will be supporting a local business

I agree with @shreddies . I can't see the point of them.

I knit from a basket, not gonna lie... Yarn bowls are useless if you're using more than one colour and, as pp said, large balls won't fit-let alone yarn cakes or anything like that. I would ask her what she would like, most knitters have a list 😁

bowchicawowwow · 13/12/2022 07:21

I've got one, it was absolutely useless.

FasterthanBolt · 13/12/2022 07:22

Sorry, I have to agree. Someone bought me one but unless you knit sitting at a table it's a bit useless! My yarn kept getting caught in the slit too which was annoying. How about a nice bag to hold her knitting or a needle case?

dubyalass · 13/12/2022 07:24

I am a keen knitter and I would want a voucher for Wool Warehouse or Rowan or similar. I've never used a yarn bowl (although I have pondered getting one, so it's useful to hear the opinions here!).

AHobbyaweek · 13/12/2022 07:25

Couldn't get on with a yarn bowl.
I love project bags. I get them from Etsy or yarn dyers though as if you look on Amazon you get big bulky things. A drawstring bag with pockets inside are the best.

Akite · 13/12/2022 07:26

Agree with asking her if there's anything she wants. My favourite knitting presents I've had have been my wool swift and wool winder which the giver had never even heard of but I love them and use them regularly. They'd be useless to anyone who doesn't buy yarn in skeins though, so much depends on what type of knitting she does and yarn she uses.

I bought a wooden one during lockdown and don't recommend it either. Despite the claims it wasn't smooth enough, so the wool didn't move freely and kept getting caught.

I kept telling myself I was going to sand it down and varnish it, but it was easier to stop using it!

isthewashingdryyet · 13/12/2022 07:57

I have a beautiful wooden one, that cost a fortune, and is now used for my stitch markers, glasses, row counter, spare dpns and left over small bits of yarn, and my scissors.
Useless as a yarn bowl, gorgeous as a holder of my bits and pieces

I’d rather a voucher too for a wool shop.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 13/12/2022 08:01

I bought one and it was lovely and novel to use for a few days but it's since become a junk bowl because it was more faff than it was worth. When it comes to knitting honestly it's simple cheap stuff that I tend to use more than anything. The net veg bags for 30p from sainsburys are perfect as project bags, Kirby grips are brilliant as stitch markers and so on.

Gift vouchers for somewhere with a nice selection of yarns and needles would be perfect.

Lincolnremain · 13/12/2022 08:45

Oh wow, that is a definitive answer! I'll scrap that idea!

Really useful thanks all of you
