Wind and tidal power for UK

UK government has done a few U-turns about wind power with the change of PM.
He was meant to decide about extending onshore wind power, but so far the only thing I have found is about Sunak starting a commitee to consider it.
Me, personally, I am in favour and hope that they decide on favour of more onshore and offshore turbines.
Also, that we start proper commercialisation of tidal power, as there are voices saying it is ready. See link, for example.

I find myself twitching, waiting for quick action to be taken towards greener energy, on the back of the price of gas crisis.

Won't be quick. Will be committees and studies and somewhere a budget to be found. The energy companies might pay if they get a stake in it or even better get to own it

The trouble is wind power is much cheaper than gas or nuclear so the government aren't interested in it.

MushMonster · 12/12/2022 21:38

Exactly, that is what I think.
We have the technology, but..... somebody wants the £££££ from oil, then the ££££££ from green.

And I am afraid that even a change of party in government will not translate in action. Though Labour has mentioned a national green energy company. That is what I think we need.

Agree OP.

MushMonster · 12/12/2022 21:41

I feel so frustrated and angry that I no longer know what to do with myself.

The big issue with more green merry is getting battery storage, particularly for wind. Tidal can help, but a lot of sites have protected species or sensitive environmental areas which would be damaged.

Batteries are getting better but living on just renewables is still a few years off.

There are battery options for power plants: www.bbc.com/future/article/20221102-how-a-sand-battery-could-transform-clean-energy
Just storing the energy on sand, quite fitting for tidal power!

I think the car batteries are the problem to solve. And the ones for solar panels.
They are the key to unlock the green power indeed.

As I see it, we put a lot of breaks to green options. But it never was much oposition to drill tonnes and tonnes of flammable materials out of land, sea, piping it across miles and miles, and burning it day in and day out.
The tidal I support is about turbines in open water. Or anacondas, though I confess I do not know that much about the anaconda and how much power it can produce.
I know there are some options that enclose large areas, but I think that is plain wrong.
Everything we do has an impact, I know it is not a magic solution.
