Snow day guilt

All the families at DD's school were so excited for a snow day. DH and I have looming work deadlines and just passed DD back and forth to each other so we could attend Zoom calls.

I was quite at peace with it until the teacher shared the pictures sent in by other families showing what they did with their day. Lots of sledging fun, Christmas crafts, writing practice...

DD watched TV most of the day and spent about 15 minutes in the snow as she was too cold (we don't have a snowsuit for her, no wellies as they were at school, no gloves as we ordered some a few weeks ago and they are still lost with Royal Mail).

Also feeling a failure at work as I had some commitments in the office today and just could not get there because of the snow (all trains cancelled).

Urgh, feeling sorry for myself, and getting big flashbacks from lockdown, shudder .

Don’t feel guilty atoll. ❤️ Sounds like a normal snow day for any working family! I could WFH but with a 17 month old my 6 and 5 year olds didn’t get much snow time! My DH works away from home so no crafts happened here!

Your day sounds like my day. As long as LO is happy, who cares what everyone else is doing?!

Different boats at all that. Remember the photos don't record the moaning about cold hands and feet and arguing about layers. She will remember the 15 mins, not the zoom calls.

Sending photos in to show writiing practice is peak performance parenting and in no way predictive of future exam success. Your child is absolutely fine with a chill day instead.

I was the same OP. DD was packed off to grandparents as myself and her dad had to go to work. They couldn’t take her out in the snow as they’re elderly and couldn’t risk slipping. I feel bad for her as I remember snow days when I was younger being full of sledging etc.

Most kids get cold after about 15 mins in the snow anyway. 15 mins is plenty. Photos tell you nothing about how an activity was really enjoyed. All good. Keep juggling the juggle and avoiding toxic comparison

Your DD will still remember the day she got to stay off school and watch TV all day because of thè snow. That's what snow days are all about for kids. Just the excitement of being off school.

i had horrible flashbacks of lockdown here too, just having the kids at home while trying to work makes me so stressed out and feel like I’m failing.
I did take the kids up the village to do some sledding, but it only lasted 5 mins until they got cold and then they complained all the way home and I had to drag them on the sledge…. Which was not good for my back. It was not a magical experience!!

Exactly this.
Local schools have closed due to snow/ice, but DCs didn't, so whilst their friends were at the park or in their gardens (or, as most, watching tv), they had to get the bus to school as per usual.

Thank you for the supportive messages, they have cheered me up!
Especially as it's not been much better since, with school opening late and nursery closing early all week, leaving me with barely any time to work inbetween. I'll just keep juggling the juggle!

The children are lovely and happy, so yes that's all that matters!

@Whitewolf2 "just having the kids at home while trying to work makes me so stressed out and feel like I’m failing." Of course you are not a failure, it's very obviously an impossible task. It seems so obvious when someone else is saying it, I need to remember it for myself too!
