Any hospital workers able to help with this?

My disabled Mum went for a scan today and was talking to the very busy nurses who were rushed off their feet. Mum asked about breaks and the nurse said they get half an hour but there's always such a big queue for the two microwaves in the main canteen they barely have time to eat.

Mum phoned and asked me to buy two more microwaves for the hospital and take the money from her account (largely housebound so can't do it herself).

Surely I can't just rock up at front desk with two microwaves from Argos can I? Do they need to be special/industrial/approved ones? I guess I need to check first but no idea which department to ask for when I get through to the switchboard.

Any hospital workers know? Also, is this even a good idea? Is there something better she could do that would be more helpful? Thanks!

This is really lovely

No idea but am keeping it active for you

Itisbetter · 12/12/2022 20:42

Call the hospital and ask

When we had a coffee machine bought for us by a grateful patient's family we just had to have Estates PAT test it for us so yes, it might be possible.

Aww that's a lovely gesture I don't know if they would be able to accept them would probably need to be PAT tested for safety x

spangleswereace · 12/12/2022 20:47

Yes it's absolutely possible and a lovely thing to do.
Best bet is to contact the area/ward you want it to go to, they will arrange to have it tested by estates.

Destiny123 · 12/12/2022 20:50

Yep definitely possible there's a team they call to get pat testing. I did it when bought a TV for my icu patient as we didn't have one and he was fed up

V kind of you, it's a never ending staff room issue

itsgettingweird · 12/12/2022 20:52

Don't know about hospitals.

But in education we can use new electrical items just brought but anything that's a year old must be PAT tested.

I'm assuming their H and S regs are probably similar?

But what a lovely mum you have

Choconuttolata · 12/12/2022 20:55

You can but they have to get it PAT tested by the Trust estates team before use. Also the kitchen may be very small and have no space for several more microwaves so it is worth asking the ward first before purchasing. It is a lovely idea.

GoldGorillaGums · 12/12/2022 20:55

How lovely of your mum! We have a similar problem but it’s because the staff kitchen is so tiny we can’t actually fit another microwave in there so could that be the issue maybe? PAT testing wouldn’t be an issue for a brand new appliance.

I’d either ring the switchboard and ask to be put through to that specific ward or contact your PALS/equivalent service.

FruitToast · 12/12/2022 20:58

What a lovely thing to do.

Another option is to ring the hospital charity and see if you can donate the money and it go towards this specific request . Our Trust would definitely sort out purchasing the microwaves for the staff if money was donated with only this purpose only. However, other hospital charities might just have a general pot that money goes into so it will be worth ringing to check.

Thank you everyone! I too thought it was a lovely thing to do and am so glad it's possible.

From what mum was saying it was the main canteen, but I will ask.

Def possible. We've got one Argos cheap microwave and we're always in a queue to warm foods at lunchtime in this weather. Not main canteen though, just our department kitchen but there's still loads of us. It only needs to be pat tested etc.

whatat · 12/12/2022 21:09

Good idea about calling the hospital charity. They can perhaps order the ones they need (heavy duty ones for example) and it will save me carrying them!

Where I work there wouldn’t be space it is infuriating and a fab idea but worth checking before buying
