Things don't get as dusty as they used to...

Having a random bus journey thought. Apart from the TV and door frames, I dont really find dust anymore. Even on top of the wardrobe. Is it just me?

When I was younger we dusted all the time. And furniture gathered dust almost daily.
Maybe its my cheap IKEA furniture instead of what I grew up with, or no cigarette smoke.
Or maybe my mind is choosing not to see it.

There's loads of dust in our house but I think a lot of it is from the open fire.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/12/2022 19:35

Weve moved house 7 times in 12 years. Some houses are dusty. Some rooms are dusty. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

teddyclown · 12/12/2022 19:36

There's lots and lots of dust in our house and impossible to keep up. But it's a 400-year-old farmhouse and it's just everywhere.
I imagine new builds don't have anything like as much.

KirstenBlest · 12/12/2022 19:38

Some houses are dustier than others. I live in a town and the windows get filthy quickly and the dust is dark in rooms that tend to have open windows.
Previous houses were in villages and there was far less dust and it wasn't as dark, and windows only needed an occasional clean.

Probably several factors including less particulate pollution.
I find if I hoover more often less dust builds up on the non hoovered surfaces so that might be a factor.

Moved from old farmhouse with hard floors and log burner downstairs, loads of dust. Now modern home and some carpeting. New cartridge log burner. Hardly any dust except in the hall and kitchen, hard floors

We have an 18th century house with beams on the ceiling and also some walls and also a log burner and the dust and cobwebs are just awful, I have never known anything like that. Old house was Victorian and no where near as bad. With this house when I hoover I don’t just have to hoover the floor every time I have to hoover floor, ceiling walls, door frames etc. it drives me bonkers.

My last flat was an absolute grot bag, got so dusty. It was Victorian. Really hoping our new place doesn't gather so much.

BertieBotts · 12/12/2022 21:06

Weird, I feel like it's the opposite. I find my house gets really dusty quickly whereas I rarely remember dusting when we were growing up. It happened, I remember yellow dusters and furniture polish. But it wasn't as much as it is now.

Maybe it is hoovering - my mum had one of the original Dysons. She loved that thing. We have a cheap plug in pull along hoover and a robot one, the robot works fine but I'm sure it's not as thorough as a proper vacuum.

The bathroom in particular I find terrible for dust, and because it's damp it just gets slid around. I hate cleaning it.

Lessoftheold · 12/12/2022 23:15

I've never lived in a house so dusty as the one I'm in now. I even have to dust the toilets! We're on a quiet road but there has been a huge amount of house building nearby for a while so that may be why.

NewToWoo · 12/12/2022 23:19

I noticed our house is way less dusty this season than before. i think it's from having no heating on, keeping windows closed and drying clothes on the line. Less lint and dried out flakes of stuff.

Shesasuperfreak · 13/12/2022 07:57

I wonder if it is the vacuuming. I'm not sure my mum vacuumed daily growing up.

Compared to my last house this one is very dusty. It's older though and I do have a log burner so I expect a lot is from that.

However, this one has less (visible) spiders. I'll take dust over that any day. 😂

Baconand · 13/12/2022 08:01

Loads here but we live in the countryside in an old cottage full of beams.
Mind you we rarely dust or hoover…..

Same here. I kitchen-towel the dust away and then clean, it works much better!

Vacuum quality has improved, and modern houses are more sealed than older properties.
