What happened to all the teen magazines??

When I was a teenager in the 90's, there was so many magazines available for teenagers- Sugar, Bliss, Mizz, Shout, More.
I was at the supermarket looking at the magazine section, and noticed there was nothing like that at anymore, where did they all go?!

The Internet happened. Most folded or went online only...

LlynTegid · 12/12/2022 18:15

Same happened with a number of other genres of magazine. Such as 'lad mags', which should not be missed.

Comedycook · 12/12/2022 18:17

Shout is still going. My dd12 loves it!

Is it? I didn't know that, I used to love Shout

More was the best teen magazine!

Kanaloa · 12/12/2022 18:22

I remember shout! I guess though that most teens don’t want to waste all their pocket money finding out what Joe Jonas is up to when they could just follow him on Instagram.

Needmorelego · 12/12/2022 18:58

@GreenTeaTuesdays technically More wasn't a 'teen' mag as it was aimed at 19 - 25 year olds.
Yeah...all that's left is Shout and Top of the Pops and to be honest they are probably more at the level for 10 year olds.
They've died because of the internet. So have (as someone has said already) all those 'lad' mags. There's hardly any women's glossy mags either.
All gone. Times change.
Wish Bunty would come back though.

EmmaAgain22 · 12/12/2022 18:59

The internet.

GreenTeaTuesdays · 12/12/2022 19:08

@Needmorelego really that old?! I'm sure I was about 16 when I bought it religiously... clearly preferred the older content!!

viques · 12/12/2022 19:12

Petticoat! I imagine most teens wouldnt be able to tell you what a petticoat is, or was.

Jewelanemone · 12/12/2022 19:14

Blue Jeans and Jackie here. Used to love the Summer Special editions. 'How to tell if he's the boy for you from the shape of his thumbs'. Free gifts of Miners eyeshadows. And the Problem Page was an education!!

flowerycurtain · 12/12/2022 19:16

Oh I loved a good magazine. Jackie and the problem pages when I was about 10 and then giggling over position of the fortnight with my 14 year old mates

Your post brought a very happy time back to me, thank you. And I seem to remember the Miners eyeshadow always being dark blue, sludge green or grey (all metallic)

Needmorelego · 12/12/2022 19:34

@GreenTeaTuesdays oh of course More was bought by much younger girls but the publisher often would have to defend themselves over such shocking (😂) things like 'position of the fortnight' by pointing out they weren't actually aimed at 14 year olds.
But of course 14 year olds bought it.

Steakandquinoa · 21/02/2023 22:16

Remember going round a friends house after school at 15 and she had a More. I was so impressed at her sophistication lol

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 21/02/2023 22:23

I remember when More felt daring 🤣

JenniferBooth · 21/02/2023 22:25

I was buying More from 17 up to the age of 25 Before it became more of a celebrity rag it carried some insightful articles. I remember them interviewing Sandi Toksvig for an article about lesbian mothers.

I also remember an article informing us that the Low Pay Unit was being disbanded and how it would lead to very low pay (this was early 1990s) lo and behold afterwards i saw jobs advertised in the Job Centre that were £1,50 an hour and £50 a WEEK. It was this that led to low pay not tax credits as some on here like to rewrite it.

Pre More i was Just Seventeen and Smash Hits and pre those it was the girls comics like Mandy and Tracy. I had Mandy every week in the early 80s.

JenniferBooth · 03/03/2023 23:01

Not a teen mag but speaking of magazines what the fuck has happened to Red. Its bloody awful now.

2chocolateoranges · 03/03/2023 23:04

Oh loved a teenage magazine in the 90s.

I delivered papers for the local shop and loved when I had teenage magazines to deliver. I would read them that evening and deliver them the next morning!

loved Mizz, More, just 17, smash hits! They were the days.

Ahhh Just 17, how grown up I felt buying that at 14. And learning all the (right) words to songs from Smash Hits. I'm so glad i grew up when I did!

longdistanceclaraclara · 21/07/2024 13:18

It's on media instead. Li still remember my my mum mum binning a miss magazine when I was 14. It was easier then!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/07/2024 13:20

Loved Smash Hits! I teach teenage girls and I'd be very surprised if many of them would be interested in an actual paper magazine when they have the internet constantly at their fingertips!
