I find it racist that the judges on Strictly continue to tell Fleur to control the power

As I just can’t imagine them repeatedly saying the same to a white woman. Interested in what others think…

I think you are reading far too much into this.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 11/12/2022 19:49

My view is that it's simply due to the style of her dancing. Nothing more, nothing less.

CharityShopChic · 11/12/2022 19:51

Have you noticed that one of the four is a black woman?

Really?! God I hadn’t noticed 🥱

Control in dance is everything. If you are not in control of your movements you lose the correct lines and you can get injured for one thing.

Comefromaway · 11/12/2022 19:57

And I have heard that advice given to white dancers many, many times.

twelly · 11/12/2022 19:58

The judges are commenting on the dancing - the comments aren't racist

SirChenjins · 11/12/2022 20:00

It’s her style of dancing - for some dances that power is a huge advantage and suits the style (as they said) while for others dances it has to be more controlled.

Yes, I do see this point of view.

I notice it in sport too. Black players/athletes doing something incredibly skilful but the emphasis being on their power than rather technical ability- even in sports like cricket.

I dunno- I might be over thinking it but it’s played on my mind a bit.

Seriously? Is this level of sarcasm really necessary just because people don't agree with you?

Comefromaway · 11/12/2022 20:05

Control of power is knowing exactly where your body is going to end up at the end of the movement.

How could anyone think for one second that I hadn’t noticed though? Quick to criticise my sarcasm but not the original question absolutely dripping in it?

No 'might' about it. Every comment and criticism isn't about race

Onnabugeisha · 11/12/2022 20:09

Well, is that valid feedback for her dancing? I would agree it could be racism if the criticism is nonsense compared to her dancing.

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2022 20:11

What the what now.

Greenshake · 11/12/2022 20:12

Sparklingbrook · 11/12/2022 20:11

What the what now.

Quite. Some people think there is a hidden agenda in everything 😐

SirChenjins · 11/12/2022 20:13

Agree @Sparklingbrook

Happyhappyeveryday · 11/12/2022 20:16

She's a strong, powerful and athletic woman, who dances in a strong, powerful, athletic way. She’s wonderful. I don’t think it’s a racist comment at all. It could be applied equally to a black or white woman, as could the adjectives I’ve used.

IntentionalError · 11/12/2022 20:17

I disagree. Fleur is a strongly built woman who has a definite physicality about her. Dainty & elfin she isn’t, so she dances to her strengths, and quite right, too. Itis not in any way racist to point this out.

blacksax · 11/12/2022 20:19

At the end of the day it is a ballroom dancing competition. The judges are commenting on the dancer's technique. Having strength and power is good, but you have to be able to control and channel it in the correct way for the style of dance being performed.

BertaHoon · 11/12/2022 20:20

Didn't they just tell Will he was too powerful in his Paso?

UrsulaPandress · 11/12/2022 20:23

Isn’t she some sort of body builder type?

Her figure screams power.

Prescottdanni123 · 11/12/2022 20:29

They are talking purely about dancing. So I don't think that comment in itself was racist. They've been unfair to Fleur the entire season though, which is a bad look considering she is the only black female contestant. But then Hamsa seems to be their favourite this year so maybe Fleur is just the designated punch bag for 2022 and it is a coincidence that she is black.

That's not to say that strictly judges are unproblematic, Shirley and Motsi in particular. They choose a favourite every year and mark them up and everybody else down. Which does nothing except persuade the British public to vote against this particular contestant. Every year, there are at least one or two female contestants that Shirley takes a dislike too and actively bullies.

Comefromaway · 11/12/2022 20:43

Fleur is not the only black, female contestant.

Fleur is mixed race, as is Molly.
