Does anyone else get nervous in the snow?

I’ve never liked the snow, or more precisely the icy conditions afterwards. I hate how it disrupts everyday life, and it makes me feel trapped. Also, feel nervous when kids go sledging incase they hurt themselves and can’t get them to hospital etc.

I don’t mind so much if it only settles on houses and fields, and so roads and pavements are kept free. However, don’t think that’s Going to happen tonight.

Although I concede it does look pretty when it’s fresh.

After slipping and breaking a bone the last time we had snow, I am ultra careful now when walking in snow.

I hate the way snow disrupts life too. It does look beautiful at first, but it is soon discoloured and dirty looking.

The weather is terrifying me atm. I'm working in the next county, and have a 50 minute drive, twice a day, in the dark, ice and freezing fog, on a combination of the M1 and narrow country roads.

I'm genuinely scared this is how I'm going to die. Yesterday I kept getting passed by ambulances, and tonight my usual exit had been closed by the police after what looked like a bad accident. If I hadn't delayed myself by giving a colleague a lift home, there's every chance I could've been caught up in it.

I don't understand why so many other drivers are driving as if the conditions weren't treacherous. I'm driving as carefully as I can, but I can't do anything about all the aggressive idiots on the road. 😕

I never go out in the snow unless I have to but I get nervous for dh who drives for a living because you never know the conditions in different areas.

Yep, hate it and don't care how "pretty" it may be. Frightened of slipping and even find walking on salted areas tricky as the salt itself is slippery. Very hilly where I live which makes it worse.

Coxspurplepippin · 11/12/2022 19:57

When we were kids enjoying snowballing and building snowmen I remember my Mum saying snow's nice if you're warm and safe inside looking out at it. I now exactly what she meant now.

TeenDivided · 11/12/2022 19:59

I get more nervous the older I get. Not so much walking, but driving.
I'm rather hoping DDs college moves to online learning for the last few days before the end of term.

Always4Brenner · 11/12/2022 19:59

Hate it I don’t go out today no church as slippery hill I’m bad enough walking without snow.

Badger1970 · 11/12/2022 20:00

Yes I get very nervous about the amount of idiots with absolutely no idea how to drive. My car now has a badly dented door panel and no trim thanks to the hapless idiot of a woman driving a RWD mercedes who came bashing into it like Bambi on ice. WTF you'd take that out in snow is beyond me.

My Dad is in a hospice, we did a horrific 40 mile round journey to visit him so carefully and then this idiot strikes as I'm dropping DD home on her drive. As if life isn't fucking hard enough at the moment, I've now got to get quotes for a new door Hmm

Tlolljs · 11/12/2022 20:01

I hate it. Scared of falling. Don’t like being cold. Scared of using too much gas on heating.
Most of all I hate that it’s quiet. Gives me the creeps.

DillDanding · 11/12/2022 20:03

No. I love it. But it never snows enough where we are for the roads to be scary.

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/12/2022 20:05

Doesn't bother me but I grew up somewhere with snow most winters. Brings back happy childhood memories.

Iliveinanoodie · 11/12/2022 20:07

Never liked the cold and snow, but it definitely gets scarier as you get older. I noticed today, walking on it slowly and carefully, while the teens trotted past in slippery looking trainers as though it was a summer's day. I feel so sorry for the current generation of oldies, as so many just aren't Internet savvy and able to do online shopping, banking etc.

Genehuntsfanclub · 11/12/2022 20:10

Can I suggest to any of you who are nervous of walking on the ice and snow to buy some ice grippers for your shoes. I used to be terrified of falling over as I have a long history of back and joint issues but thanks to ice grippers I can happily walk about without the fear of falling. It's an absolute game changer and I regularly recommend them to people I meet out walking in icey/ snowy conditions.

Ostryga · 11/12/2022 20:10

I despise it. A lovely lady slipped on Friday on the school run and broke her hip. Luckily Dd and I walked past just as she fell and got her sorted, but it was down a side alley and I dread to think what would have happened if we hadn’t been there.

I’ve put a great big sign up on my gate because my path is completely vile and a slippery death trap if there’s even a hint of frost. The poor Amazon delivery guy didn’t read it and skidded the whole way up.

realmsofglory · 11/12/2022 20:13

i used to love snow but went to Finland last winter and there was (obviously) so much snow and it was just all compacted down - hardly any of it gritted and I spent aweek fearing slipping every single step I took and hated sbow at teh end

cobblers123 · 11/12/2022 20:14

Yes. I fell once, ended up flat on my back and took me 10 minutes just to get to my knees. Hurt my back also.

I'm 12 years older these days and if I fell again, I doubt I could even get on to my knees let alone actually stand up. ❄️

illiterato · 11/12/2022 20:15

I just moved back from Asia so haven’t driven in the snow/ ice for more than a decade. Got in the car this morning and thought “god, I can’t remember what I’m supposed to remember about driving in the snow”. To be fair it was mainly slushy so I think tomorrow will be a bit scarier as roads will freeze overnight and doubt the gritters will get as far as us.

Comedycook · 11/12/2022 20:16

I hate it. It looks pretty when you look out of the window but it's horrible to go out in. Disruptive to public transport. Scary to walk on icy pavements. I hate driving in it. Horrible stuff.

ADHD123 · 11/12/2022 20:18

Nopes doesn’t faze me at all

I used to drive a gritter (had to drive myself to work before hand) and can confidently drive in most conditions

Now walking in it is a different matter and decent boots are essential…not overly confident walking

OrangeBananaFish · 11/12/2022 20:18

Another one here who feels exactly the same. People get excited about snow and go all happy, but not me. As everyone has said, it just causes disruption and chaos. Also, as has been mentioned, while it may look pretty when its falling and when its first laid, but it doesn't take long to get sludgy and dirty.

Although, I must admit that I do think our problem is that it doesn't snow enough. I live in the NE and while we do get snow every year, it's usually only one or two days a winter when it causes problems for me. If it snowed every year like say in Canada or Scandinavia then we'd be used to it and would be able to deal with it better. I think if its going to snow then it should do it properly or not at all.

Precipice · 11/12/2022 20:22

Snow no, but the ice yes.

Pavement treatment is woefully inadequate.

Recently I slipped, fell completely and hit my head hard against the pavement. Had to go to A&E to fix up the cut in the back of my head in my head. While I was waiting, there were a number of others who had experienced similar.

SirChenjins · 11/12/2022 20:24

Excuse the horrible URL

doitwithlove · 11/12/2022 20:26

Absolutely HATE snow of any kind.

My drive home from work took 1.5 hrs compared to 30mins this evening.

Dreadful driving conditions

SinnerBoy · 11/12/2022 20:27

MadameSzyszkoBohusz

Oh yes, moron drivers. I love them!

About 15 years ago, we were driving up the A1 and it snowed heavily. I was driving in the ruts in the inside lane, at 40, as slow as I dared. I saw headlights approaching at great speed and said to my wife, "Brace yourself!"

I was about to steer across the hard shoulder, he was beeping and flashing, but went by on the right. Visibility was terrible.

A few minutes later, his car was in the outside lane, pointing the wrong way and smashed up. He was trying to flag cars down and she said, "Aren't you going to stop?"

"No, I hope he bloody well freezes to death! Shame he didn't kill himself there."

Yes, a BMW pilot in a T-shirt.
