Is it common to get fever with conjunctivitis?

I always thought it was just an eye irritation. But DS (nearly three) has clearly come down with it - green gunk oozing from pink eyes - but is also full of snot and running a fever.

I managed to avoid it when I was young I suspect I will be coming down with it soon, but I just wondered if this was normal as fever wasn’t listed on the nhs symptoms?

Could he be ill with a virus/fever and the conjunctivitis is in addition? I have had flu and had it as a (horrible) extra, as you're already run down. Dd2 used to regularly get eye infections on top of colds.

Are you sure its conjunctivitis and not snot backing up out of tear ducts? They do find it hard to blow their nose at this age 🤢😁but it does sound like he has a virus which can often cause a high temp. If you’re still concerned tomorrow a pharmacist will be able to advise if it’s indeed conjunctivitis and can prescribe cream on minor ailments 😊

Conjunctivitis can be secondary to another infection, I used to suffer badly with recurrent tonsillitis and always got conjunctivitis during a flare up

I've got Influenza A, which is doing the rounds, and have developed conjunctivitis as one of the many delightful symptoms, so it might be that? Especially as I have also had fever and huge amounts of snot, so it seems to be a part of the same package. Worth a call to 111 or your GP?

You can get 'Infected Eye' drops over the counter at a pharmacist. Also, scrupulous hand-washing because conjunctivitis spreads so easily. Good luck - hope everything work out well.

I had this when I had a sinus infection. My eye was a bit swollen and was producing matter. Even when I finished antibiotics it still wasn't 100% but then slowly got better

AnyFucker · 11/12/2022 18:57

Not on it’s own, no

Hashtagihearya · 11/12/2022 18:59

If you are generally unwell you will get conjunctivitis and vice versa it's all connected

Drcoxisafox · 11/12/2022 19:49

Ah okay that makes more sense. He got a virus about four weeks ago and took a while to recover then went back to nursery last week which is when he started producing a lot of snot. I’ll see how he goes over night he’s producing a lot of green snot and green gunk, and I’ve had to give him calpol. He’s also complaining his back hurts. I’ll keep a very close eye and call the pharmacist or the GP tomorrow depending on how he goes.

I had some unopened ointment for bacterial conjunctivitis in the cupboard for over twos so have applied that.

My son has had these very same symptoms the past week. He's been very poorly with it.one night his eyes were fused together from all the gunk, also had temperature and blocked nose. Xx

Drcoxisafox · 11/12/2022 20:36

@thesurreymum irs horrible isn’t it! Is he on the mend now?

My dc had it recently at the same time as an illness (temp and chesty cough). As have a few of her classmates. I think there must be some going round. She’s never had it before. It can be viral or bacterial. Not sure if strep A can cause it as I’m pretty sure strep B can.

729927luc · 11/12/2022 21:08

I've had the same this week. Went to the pharmacy, they said it's viral conjunctivitis. Basically, there's so much mucus it comes out of the eyes and makes them gunky, red and stuck together at night. Lovely! Keep clean with cotton wool pads and cooled boiled water. Cleared up in a couple for days.

Drcoxisafox · 11/12/2022 21:59

It hadn’t occurred to me it could be Strep A :( is conjunctivitis one of the symptoms? I haven’t seen anything about it in all the media coverage

@User98866 did they need antibiotics?

I feel so sad for him. His cough is coming back because he’s so snotty and he just woke up and freaked out because his eyes wouldn’t open easily due to gunk

Both teen's had conjunctivitis at the end of bad cold/cough so all linked in together as a virus probably.

Drcoxisafox · 12/12/2022 10:55

I’ve found cold tea to clean his eyes really
really works.
now I just have to see if he will let me use the nasal sucker on his snot to help with the mucus 😩

No for mine it was mild. I bathed them in salt water and it cleared up within a few days. It went from one eye to the other so I’m thinking hers was bacterial.
