Fantasy book recommendations

I'm looking to buy some books for someone who has shelves full of Anne McCaffrey, Robin Hobb, Jean M. Auel and similar. If those authors float your boat, what would you like to see poking out the top of your Christmas stocking this year?

Newer books that won't have filtered down to the charity shops would be especially good, as those're the only places she shops for books. Thank you!

Naomi Novik? The standalone ones Spinning Silver and Uprooted are great and the Deadly Education series is brilliant.

Katherine Arden's Winternight trilogy is beautiful too, steeped in Russian myths.

You could also consider Natasha Pulley books which are half historical, half fantasy and one has a good dose of time slip. All wonderful reads.

Jodi Taylor - One Damned thing after another.
Anything by Ilona Andrews - Magic Bites is the best series, but the Innkeeper books are excellent too.

I love Mercedes Lackey. fantasticfiction.com have a complete list of her books, separated by series. (And I'm a McCaffrey fan too)

Rivers of London, bloody great series.

Second Naomi Novik. In addition to those mentioned by pp, her Temeraire series is sublime!

I'd also add in Brandon Sanderson - in particular, the Mistborn series, and Trudi Canavan's Magicians Guild series.

I adore Robin Hobb and would strongly recommend Brandon Sanderson's stuff.

I started with Elantris and then The Mistborn trilogy and just fell in love with the universe.

Agree with above. I'm currently reading the Temeraire series.

Thank you all for the leads!

Trudy Canavan from a Robin Hobb fan

Sewannoying · 11/12/2022 18:03

Agree with Ilona Andrews and Brandon Sanderson. I also really like the Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman

If you are looking for something with a very recent publication date, the Rose and Rook series by M.A. Carrick is very good. It has a Venetian feel.

Binglebong · 11/12/2022 18:31

The Broken Kingdoms by n K jesimin. And Brandon Sanderson.

Ohuhu · 17/12/2022 18:03

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the suggestions. Naomi Novik and Brandon Sanderson came up a lot and I couldn't see any on her shelves when I went round, so I've bought her the first book in the Temeraire and Mistborn series.

Excellent (and very generous!) call..

Another vote for Trudy Canavan
