If you buy wool, what's the easiest way to roll long skeins of wool into a ball?

I'm sat here rolling a mahoosive 300m skein into a ball and it's taking forever. I also keep dropping it & it rolls across the floor. There must be an easier way surely? I'm alone for reference, so there's no 2nd pair of hands to help.

Back of a dining chair! Place the whole thing on the back of the chair, and wind from there. Closest thing to having a second pair of hands to hold the skein while you wind.

Back of a chair?

I eventually bought a swift+winder. Definitely worth it!

A swift and wool winder is the best way but you can hold your skein on the back of a kitchen chair or similar to make it easier to wind and avoid tangles.

Get a nostepinne. Look on youtube for tutorials.

Why do you need to wind it into a ball?

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 11/12/2022 11:13

If you’re already a bit into the ball, pop the skein over the back of a chair like pp have said and keep winding.

I bought a ball winder and made a DIY swift eventually.

OP said she's winding a skein. It's really difficult to knit or crochet directly from skeins as they don't pull easily. You are supposed to wind them into balls.

Have you knit from a skein before? I've tried and it ended up a tangled mess! Would love to know if there's a way to do it without that happening!

swift and winder

Put them on your Christmas list! They are a good investment as they last.

I got my ball winder more than a decade ago and upgraded my swift after 8 years (and that was more to do with my needs than the old one not being functional)..

Dining chair - genius! That should make it really fast. I've never heard of a Swift & Winder before so I'll look that up. Skeins look lovely & you can really see the colour/texture but they do tangle easily.

I'm such a sucker for a pretty yarn.... Grin

Omg that ball winder is fabulous!

I have a swift and winder. There are some beautiful, wood ones but I just got cheap, plastic affairs
They both work fine and I got a bit obsessed winding all my yarn. They stack beautifully 😅

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2022 14:00

Never heard of winders but I do have suitable dining chairs. Thanks for posting, *@Spliffle ‘, since I do for once have some lovely pure wool that needs to be ‘balled’. Won’t bother with a winder, most of my yarn is for ‘worry monsters’ - my main output now - which is cheap, ready wound acrylic.
