Does anyone here remember how to make a pom pom with cardboard circles?

My gran taught me this, using two cardboard circles with a hole cut in the centre. I've forgotten how big the centre hole needs to be? Do you remember?

Of course!

McBurgerTime · 10/12/2022 20:09

There's no set size. Just Google and you'll see a million tutorials. I normally make them about three inches across with the circle about an inch.

Yeah, loads of tutorials on YouTube! I think the plastic pom-pom makers are so much easier to use though!

I remember doing it, but I too have forgotten the finer details. I'm here for the pom pom refresher session.

The bigger the hole, the smaller and denser the pom pom (assuming you fill the hole when you are wrapping the wool|).

Knockagain · 10/12/2022 20:12

Yes! Use to love doing this as a kid

TimeForMeToF1y · 10/12/2022 20:17

Of course, no set size to the cardboards bits but don't make the holes too big or it'll take ages to make

Ahhh thanks for this. This is the sciencey bit I was missing. I'm lusting after a nice string of speckled pom-poms like I've seen in the shops.. Grin

I used to love making these

Ahhhh... memories!

Yes definitely have a look on Google

You have to guess roughly how much wool you need and then wrap it round the 2 card circles

Snip it then tie it up

Bluevelvetsofa · 10/12/2022 20:50

Yes, I made on a couple of weeks ago for the hat I’d knitted. Two circles, wind the wool round until the hole is closed. Snip round the outside of the circles and tie round the middle and cut off the cardboard circles.

User478 · 10/12/2022 20:57

If you want a tennisball or smaller sized pom pom it is much, much quicker to make them with your hand like this:

Spliffle · 10/12/2022 21:04

Omg guess what I did! I only started winding around ONE ring! Durrrr, I forgot to put the two together. Xmas Blush

Thanks @User478 I'll give that a try too & report back..

I've done it lots of times with DC when fashioning dressing up outfits. It's quite a fun and pleasing task.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 10/12/2022 22:01

Top tip: plastic pom-pom makers you can buy from Hobbycraft (or elsewhere) are a whole lot faster than using the cardboard rings. Although there's something quite relaxing about winding wool I suppose.
