Goosebumps?

BergamotandLime · 10/12/2022 19:52

We've been reading through the Enid Blyton Adventure series - even better than FF!

Idbetternamechange · 10/12/2022 19:53

Percy Jackson series?

keep it in mind for a couple of years

The how to train your dragon series.

Enid Blyton has a few other series - the twins at st Clare's, secret seven

Then I'd recommend Michael Morpurgo

Swallows and Amazon Series by Arthur Ransome
Naitabal series by David Schutte Author's website Ds loved those at 7yo and if you order them from the author then he'll sign them, and you can write to him.
Lone Pine Series by Malcolm Saville
Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence
Possibly Alex Rider (may be a bit old for him currently) by Antony Horowitz

modgepodge · 10/12/2022 20:02

the ending blyton ‘adventurous four’, ‘island of’ and ‘secret of’ series are all similar to famous five (teenagers off on adventures) and actually probably more exciting. I was a big Enid fan as a kid and enjoyed those just as much as famous five.

Eva Ibbotson’s The Secrets of Platform 13
Andy Stanton’s Mr Gum

Meduse · 10/12/2022 20:10

For more modern authors take a look at “how to grow a dragon series” by Andy Shepherd. If you look at the Book Trust website there are plenty of suggestions of all sorts of wonderful books, not all series of course!

BeyondMyWits · 10/12/2022 20:14

Lemony Snicketts books, my kids loved those.

CatChant · 10/12/2022 20:18

Cressida Cowell - How to Train Your Dragon series
Caroline Lawrence - Roman Mysteries series
Stephen Elboz - A Handful of Magic series
Enid Blyton - Mystery/Find Outers series

Ah we did see these but think it was down as for ages 9-14 do you think they'd be ok for a 7 year old?

Goosebumps?

Just had a look, he's a bit of a sensitive soul so not sure if he will be ok if they are more spooky?

My DD is nine but doesn't like anything scary. I would say it would be fine - she really loves them. The other ones are the Secret series which we've discovered. Need to branch out beyond Blyton 😂

DarkDarkNight · 10/12/2022 20:25

My son loved Mr Gum around that age.

GhostsJulianforPrimeMinister · 10/12/2022 20:32

Thank you all this is great, I'm going to be spending some money on books tonight! :)

DS2 (6) is loving ‘The Dragon in the Library’ series by Louie Stowell and the ‘Toto the Ninja Cat’ series by Dermot O’Leary.

Beamur · 10/12/2022 20:44

Mr Gum books are hilarious and bonkers.
Horrible histories.
Wings & co.
The Mysterious Benedict society.

Biscuitsneeded · 10/12/2022 20:47

Mr Gumm. Used to make my and my then 7 year old laugh hysterically!
How to Train your Dragon.

catsonahottinroof · 10/12/2022 20:47

You could start him off on Harry Potter - I know he's a bit young for the later ones but if he's a good reader the first couple should be fine and he can age with them. My dd's both loved:
Flat Stanley (you might think this is a bit too easy but they both liked it when I thought they would be too old, like age 10).
Percy Jackson
Artemis Fowl
For non-fiction, the Horrible Histories and Horrible Science books
The 'Rose' series of books by Holly Webb (might be too girly for him, though)

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 10/12/2022 21:04

I remember reading The ship that flew by Hilda Lewis
I loved it

mouse70 · 10/12/2022 21:38

Possibly Old Fashioned but C.S Lewis, E Nesbit, Swiss Family Robinson, Children of New Forest
