What does a WORKING class Christmas look like

Inspired by the thread about middle class Christmases...

Braylen Jayden and Shayden come downstairs and rip open too many presents wrapped in non eco friendly paper purchased from Home Bargains with mums benefit money
they then watch YouTube on the widescreen tv whilst eating sugary cereal
Shayden is just in a nappy even though he’s 3 because mum is obvs too lazy to potty train
it’s not even a £25 reusable nappy that everyone can obviously afford to save the planet
Also the house is a balmy 25 degrees because of those pesky benefits paying for the heating and it’s a grotesque new build on a soul less estate (which actually has decent insulation)

dad comes down at noon cracks open a Stella and flexes his tattooed biceps. ‘English and Proud’ is his left arm and his right is ‘Kayliee Foreva’ the name of his
beloved baby mama

They have an Iceland feast followed by a bottle of echo falls and a bottle of Prosecco whilst mum lights her new Yankee candle and dad goes to the White Lion with the lads

PLEASE NOTE this is a piss take , I find a lot of MN’ers horrible Waitrose/period features home only / merino wool obsessed snobs tbh and my kids are getting gifts from home bargains and I’ll neck a few Prosecco and go to our local pub for a couple also . Also I live in a town lot of MN’ers think you prob need a stab vest to walk through 🤣

Hate to tell you, piss takes aren't allowed on here anymore.

Come downstairs to a pile of pressies for each kid. Kids rip them open whilst parents have a cup of tea or a can of lager. Selection boxes for breakfast. Wrapping paper then stuffed into a black bin bag. Dinner prep started at around 10. Family and friends drop in at random times to either stay for a brew or a can if not for dinner. Loads of alcohol drank in dribs and drabs through the day. Dinner - turkey, ham, chicken, pie, Yorkshire puddings, sprouts, veg, stuffing etc - plated up and served to guests sat around a table in mis-matched chairs and to those who don't fit around the table sat on the settee or any other suitable surface. Radio on. People and kids getting loud and drunk and giddy. People falling asleep. Quality Streets and Roses and Celebrations passed around. More drinking. Then everyone fucks off and boxing day is spent putting the house back together before doing it all again at someone else's house.

@FrightfullyFreezy you've legit just described my childhood christmas 😂😂😂

This is bang on!

It might have changed now but working class Christmases were big and excessive (and often on the never-never) because that was the only time you got anything. Mum saved up through the Christmas Club and paid every week to Kay's Catalogue so we'd have some big things to unwrap. We didn't get anything else all year.

I was WC now MC and my kids get everything they want year round.

This is a great point, we only got new toys and 'nice clothes' / non basics for Christmas and birthdays.

The rest of the year was tough. My mom had to preempt what we would like in September and get it us for my winter birthdays.

However we had huge piles at Christmas because she wanted it to be special and she saved a few pounds a week to do so.

plinkplinkfizzer · 11/12/2022 13:26

I don't think my parents ever got into debt for Christmas they were always big savers . But we did have good Christmases I imagine they saved up . We got bugger all the rest of the year though , except for my brother who was spoiled 'cos he was a boy ( still resent that to be honest ). Anyway we did get up at 3 am and chocolate was eaten for breakfast .

For what? Having a sense of humour? Odd you’d report this but not OPs obviously goady thread.

I’m pleased to see Mumsnet agreed with me. There was nothing funny about it.

You don’t get sarcasm do you?

I’m pleased you’re embarrassed.

I think the truth hurts. I know many working class people that are in that situation actually. I can't help it if that is mainly true and people are offended.

And no middle class people that the same applies to? Don’t be ridiculous.

DepIndoChridmadWidMe · 10/12/2022 21:11

Oh FFS. What a fucking joke. Some little middle class virtue-signaller got my post deleted.
Yet Mumsnet allows racism and ableism to stand... 🤔

It was me. Solidly working class here, which you undoubtedly are not.

Oh dear, I didn't give an earnest answer to a class-baiting thread. Boo hoo.

It wasn't class baiting. Stop being so chippy.
