False teeth in 30s. Scared and need advice

So I have no lower molars on my right side and only one on my left that I use to eat with. Saw the dentist yesterday for an upper wisdom tooth ti be removed and discussed my last lower molar causing agony and she told me it’s cracked all the way through the Root and infected. It’s being yanked out dec 28th.

that feels like a long way off.. do I live in soup? I don’t want implants and the thought of dentures makes me feel 80 when I’m not even 40.

Why don't you want implants? They're life-changing.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 10/12/2022 16:28

Having false teeth will look a hell of a lot better than no teeth!

Get implants if you can afford them or dentures if you can't. It's ridiculous you would live like that for vanity!

DenholmElliot11 · 10/12/2022 16:29

Your definately a bit too young for dentures.

Whats the problem with implants?

Dentist here. You'd be amazed if you knew just how many people have false teeth.
Please get some. At the very least it will help to protect your remaining teeth and restore the natural shape snd function of your mouth.
Try them out and see how you get on. There are loads of different types of dentures, flexible types, metal ones, acrylic, ones that are made using 3 D printers. Technology, materials snd techniques have increased hugely.

If you don't like them, save up for implants. They are life changing. And please take any advice offered from your dentist to try and preserve what you have left

DisforDarkChocolate · 10/12/2022 16:32

Implants are bloody expensive, out of a lot of people's reach.

flflflf · 10/12/2022 16:32

yes go for implants! not sure why you wouldn't. what are your reasons for not wanting?

Kerantli · 10/12/2022 16:33

DP has no teeth - he had a dancing accident in his 20s and he's in his 40s now, and said at first all he could eat was soup, mashed potatoes and rice.
He can now eat most things (very hard things like nuts are out) as the gums harden, but does regularly burn his mouth because he can't tell how hot something is.

Do try at least dentures, but all hope of eating normally isn't out of the question if you don't get on with them

AclowncalledAlice · 10/12/2022 17:00

I had my first set of partial dentures when I was 12. I'm in my mid 50's now and outside of family and very close friends no-one else knows. dentures have come a long way and do not look at all obvious. Go for it OP and don't look back.

Oucht · 10/12/2022 17:59

I can’t afford implants. I have several chronic health conditions which mean I can’t work but am not deemed I’ll enough for government support so we struggle on one wage.

right now I just want time to pass to get this tooth out. It’s cracked through the tooth, through the root and is infected. I have a 3 week wait before dentist can see me.

I have a full upper and partial lower, and have done for years and I would say I eat the same things as I always did, apples are out unless I cut them up but everything else is in.

Oucht · 10/12/2022 19:55

I wouldn’t be getting dentures or any other replacement out of vanity. I don’t care what I look like. I’m thinking more about being able to eat.

I got a denture, I'm 30 crown failed
Can see it when I laugh. Failed crown and ED as a teen.
Luckily I was on mat leave so was entitled to it for free. Will save for implant :(

SheWontSheCantShesLeft · 10/12/2022 20:05

You'll be able to eat fine

HelpMeCope85 · 10/12/2022 20:06

Slightly off topic. But how did you lose your teeth OP? Is it attached to your other medical conditions? I’d consider Turkey Teeth!

Underscore21 · 10/12/2022 20:31

If, after your extraction on 28th December, you still have 20 healthy teeth remaining; you should be able to function just fine without any replacements-prosthetics or otherwise. The shortened dental arch concept is a perfectly valid option in this clinical situation.

Bottom right 2 molars broken deep down from an impacted wisdom that was so far down in the jaw I needed surgery to remove them.
The left side same story with a wisdom tooth horizontal but was able to be removed around 10 yrs ago.

my conditions mean I was thrown into chemical menopause almost 20 yrs ago:
my bones and joints are effectively 70yrs old in terms of hormones. It’s made my teeth bad and have spinal issues from it too.

I will be left with 10 on the bottom with no molars.

Flowers

Get some dentures/partial dentures to protect your remaining teeth.

I had to survive on only lower pre molars after having my only molars removed. Eventually the gum heals and you can chew fine.

Underscore21 · 10/12/2022 21:02

Do you have 10 healthy remaining teeth in your upper jaw too OP?

You'll be able to eat better with dentures

Yes. Only wisdom teeth removed from the top.

My husband had to get a partial denture for his front teeth in his 30s. It’s been life changing for him in a good way and you can’t tell that they’re not his real teeth. There are a few videos on YouTube of people talking about their experiences which you might find useful?

Moogoopixie · 07/11/2023 22:50

I have had mine done today partial dentures and you know what so far so good they look amazing after having 3 badly broken teeth taken out it is a strange feeling and eating I've not tried yet as their new in today but dentist said soft foods to begin with partials are better then no teeth honestly
