How to keep toddler warm at night

My LO is 21 months old, she currently sleeps in her cot and has a 2.5 tog sleeping bag and pillow - and I’ve just added a light blanket.

Our house is pretty old and doesn’t hold the heat that well. With the really cold temps right now the heating isn’t touching the sides unless we leave it on all day and we can’t afford to do that.

Aside from multiple layers what are others doing right now to keep their little ones warm of a night ? I’m worried as the temp is dropping below 16 in her room.

Up the bag to 3.5 tog. What is she wearing underneath? Could you add more? I find fleece lined onesies keep my kids really warm.

SouperNoodle · 10/12/2022 13:20

Google: 'Gro company what to wear' and it will tell you what they should wear depending on age, weight and temperature 😊

Tbh, I'm just layering my DD up. She's 16 months. Our house is old, detached and really cold at night, same as you we couldn't leave the heating on all the time. She's had a vest, sleepsuit, pj's and then a 2.5 tog sleep bag but she was cold last night and got into bed with me.

Don’t worry too much- cold babies and toddlers cry. If my 2 year old makes a sound in the night her blankets fallen off.
as for clothes- we do vest, fluffy pjs a quilt and a light blanket

Sprouttreesareamazing · 10/12/2022 13:22

Bed socks. Proper ones...

Newmum2127 · 10/12/2022 13:25

I feel bad because I hate that her room is cold but I just can’t have the heating on constantly but if I layer her up enough she should be okay right ? Worried about her getting Sick 😫. I think I will up the tog to 3.5 as suggested and I will also look at the gro company link suggested. We’re okay of a night but that’s because we can wrap ourselves up in a blanket and she of course can’t do that

also ... last night she had a long sleeved vest, long sleeved PJ’s, 2.5 tog bag and I ended up putting a light blanket over her

I believe her room should be at 18.
Were struggling keeping 3 yr old warm he is naturally a cold child.
U can get film that goes on Windows to help draughts.
Fleece onsies

But chilly air all night isnt good its not full winter yet.

I have my 17 month olds cot beside my bed...extra body heat plus I can add or remove blankets as needed through the night. Last night she was in a vest, fleecy pj suit, 2.5 tog sleeping bag, crochet blanket and fleece blanket. The blankets came off at some point but she slept on so must have been ok. My house is large and draughty too.

BumbleNova · 10/12/2022 13:30

Mine have a wool mattress topper - bought on eBay, seems to keep them warmer. I bundle up my DS2 with blankets on top of him. He is big enough to chuck it off if too hot.

tealandteal · 10/12/2022 13:30

DS is 5 months and still in with us, the room is usually 16 or just below at night. He is wearing a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 3.5 tog sleeping bag.

Have you thought of getting a plug in heater to heat just the one room?

'But chilly air all night isnt good its not full winter yet.'

Tell that to my chilblain covered toes Grin

Believeitornot · 10/12/2022 13:35

Is she waking up in the night? Is there mould issues in her room? If not, then I wouldn’t worry as she must be fine temperature wise.

Sanch1 · 10/12/2022 13:36

My DD nearly two has been wearing two baby gros, long sleeved vest and 2.5tog and seems ok. Her room drops to about 14 overnight at the minute 😱

Newmum2127 · 10/12/2022 13:36

Sounds like layers are my only option really

Not too keen on a plug in heater, can sometimes be dangerous and also costly to run.

it’s crazy as last year we had the heating set to 18 degrees all night and never let it get below that, we did it all winter with no issues (financially) and now we can afford to put the heating on of a morning and evening for about 3 hours max a day, any more and the bill would be crippling

Is she cold? We have an old house too but thick walls so takes ages to cool down (and warm up). DS 17mo is in vest, pjs, 2.5tog, and a blanket he doesn’t use. I tried to introduce him to a duvet (tucked under the mattress) but he’d crawl out. Room is around 16.

Bemyclementine · 10/12/2022 13:39

If she's sleeping through its likely she's warm enough. I have an old house, rarely us it above 18 degrees and in the morning it's been 12 before now. I can't afford to have the heating on overnight.

My dc had layers at that age. Vests, pjs, socks, grobag/thick onesie.

Theyre a bit older now , 5 and 7, 5 yr old is still rubbish at keeping a duvet on. But he does have layers and a "warmie" bean bag thingumy.

Newmum2127 · 10/12/2022 13:42

She woke a couple times in the night with an odd cry, first time she felt a little cool so I put a blanket on her, my partner checked on the next wake up and he said she felt okay, so not really sure, all I know is that the actual temp in the room is dipping below 16. Our house is old and the walls are not thick unfortunately, so when the house heats up it’s lost quickly, we have fireplaces which we have tried to plug where possible, we have new windows, new roof, insulation in the loft, house is still cold
