Steep drive + snow and ice

Grateful for wisdom. I've just moved house and the drive is short but very steep. Snow is forecast and I've been wondering about the best way to ensure I can get the car out of the drive. I have arthritis and would struggle to shovel snow. Should I buy some salt? Grit? Some other clever device? TIA.

I would buy a few bags of salt for the driveway and path etc......then I would probably park on the street lol .

I used to live in the spa and would have to dig my drive out to the road in the morning - and then dig the drive to get IN when I got home because the gritters would’ve pushed everything back in.

In retrospect I should’ve parked 100m away on the main road and saved myself a lot of pointless back-breaking work.

if you haven’t got winter tyres you’re not getting it up that steep drive anyway.

Spa = alps

Can you park on the street across the entrance to your own drive?

Ohyoubadkitten · 10/12/2022 08:25

Thanks - I may try to park on the road but it's a twisty estate cul-de-sac and not a lot of room.
Probably even if I get the car off the drive I'm going to get stuck - we're at the top of a hill!

I park right at the bottom, have lots of bags of salt and clear the now as soon as it has stopped falling. If you let it freeze on then it's far harder to clear.

MrsAmaretto · 10/12/2022 08:49

You need to park elsewhere, especially if you don’t have winter tyres.

Do you live by me? 🧐 Steep drive, live off a big hill. It's like narnia in winter! Turn into the main roads and everywhere is clear but our estate is in the depths of winter.

My car slid down the drive the other night, getting all my tyres changed today. Have been parking across the bottom of the drive. We've sanded and gritted the drive but this year its not helped, dh's car also slid a bit yesterday. Good luck.

Would snow socks for your tyres be any use? Can only use them on snow but relatively easy to get on and off and make a surprising difference to traction levels for just a thin fabric cover.

I'll see if I can find a link (ours are old as Dh got them for his car in 2009/10 and bought a set for me a couple of years later). They are somewhat specific to the tyres/car, just to beware when choosing.

We live on a steep road so can't get out of the drive in icy weather. If we know that there is going to be snow and ice we park a couple of roads away. We also have all weather tyres. Those in the road with sloped drives get grit and salt in to make walking safe.We live in a part of the country where we can get caught by this.

DeePlume · 10/12/2022 15:16

I used to have a drive like this. Always used to keep bags of rock salt and sprinkle on frosty nights!

Perihelion · 10/12/2022 16:52

If you're going to need your car, you don't have winter tyres and your road isn't gritted, park at the bottom of the hill, away from any potential zones where other cars may slide into you.

We once got stuck on a steep drive when it snowed whilst we were visiting the in-laws. We finally managed to get moving after they got some old rugs from their garage and we placed them under the wheels. It worked a treat. I imagine some rubber mats could be even better.
